HONG KONG - Jun 1, 2026 - Hong Kong filmmaker James L.J. Hung has officially unveiled Odium Zero, an AI-assisted fantasy action animation being billed as Hong Kong’s first AI-assisted animated film developed for theatrical release.
The project made its public debut at Hong Kong Comic Con 2026, where Hung presented exclusive footage, character reveals, and plans for a broader franchise universe to a packed audience of fans, media, and industry professionals.
The launch arrives as artificial intelligence continues to reshape conversations across the global film industry. While major studios and independent creators alike are exploring AI-powered production tools, Odium Zero represents one of Asia’s most ambitious attempts to combine traditional animation techniques with emerging technologies.
“This isn’t about replacing artists,” Hung said during the presentation. “It’s about giving independent creators the tools to build ambitious cinematic worlds that traditionally required massive studio infrastructure.”
Supported through Hong Kong’s creative industry initiatives and featuring acclaimed actor Simon Yam, the film has attracted attention as a potential model for how locally developed intellectual property can be produced and scaled for international audiences.
Set in a dystopian near future, Odium Zero follows a society devastated by a mysterious substance that transforms infected humans into violent creatures. As civilisation collapses, a young girl named May May becomes central to uncovering the truth behind the outbreak. Beyond its action-driven narrative, the film explores themes of misinformation, fear, and social trust.
“It’s ultimately a story about lies,” Hung said. “About what happens when fear destroys trust, and whether people can still protect their humanity when everything around them is falling apart.”
The production combines hand-drawn 2D artwork with AI-assisted animation workflows. According to the creative team, live-action camera choreography and stunt performances are first captured before being translated into stylised animated sequences through AI-supported processes.
Odium Zero was selected for the third edition of Tomorrow Animation, a programme organised by the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Association and supported by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency to foster original animation intellectual property and technological innovation.
The film also reunites Hung with Yam, one of Hong Kong cinema’s most recognised actors, following their collaboration on the upcoming crime thriller Mastermind.
Following its Comic Con debut, Odium Zero is scheduled to be showcased at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival ahead of a planned theatrical release later this year.
As Hong Kong’s entertainment industry adapts to rising production costs and rapid technological change, Odium Zero offers an early example of how AI-assisted filmmaking could help independent creators develop globally competitive content while maintaining creative authorship.
