What Happened?

Shares of online learning platform Coursera (NYSE: COUR) jumped 7.5% in the afternoon session after the company announced that its Board of Directors approved a share repurchase program to buy back up to $500 million of its common stock.

The buyback plan is substantial, representing roughly one-third of the company's market value. A share repurchase reduces the number of shares available on the market, which can increase the value of the remaining shares.

Coursera stated that the program reflects management's confidence in its business strategy and its ability to generate strong cash flow in the future. This move follows the company's recent combination with Udemy, and it signals leadership's belief in the long-term opportunities ahead.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Coursera’s shares are very volatile and have had 24 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 21 days ago when the stock gained 8.4% on the news that the stock rebounded from a sell-off that followed its first-quarter earnings report.

The company's shares had previously fallen after it reported adjusted earnings of $0.07 per share, which missed market expectations. However, investors appeared to shift their focus to the stronger points of the announcement. Coursera's Q1 revenue grew 9% year-over-year to $195.7 million, beating estimates, with its Consumer segment growing 10%. The company also added a record 7.6 million new registered learners.

Furthermore, management reaffirmed its full-year 2026 revenue guidance of $805 to $815 million, signaling confidence in its business outlook while moving forward with its planned merger with Udemy.

Coursera is down 20.3% since the beginning of the year, and at $5.65 per share, it is trading 55.6% below its 52-week high of $12.70 from August 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Coursera’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $146.62.
