New social media app, Popping, is ‘Generation Z’s Twitter’

By: Get News
Dubbed a ‘Twitter for places’ by GenZ users, Popping turns map locations into digital communities where users connect and share life in real-time.

Atlanta-based startup Popping has launched a new social media app that transforms physical places into spaces where users can connect and share life in real-time. Popping makes it easy for people to scope out a scene before they go out, see what’s popping with their friends, check out what’s happening in their favorite places, and chat about news and trending topics. The app lets users create posts, called “pings,” to share into their chosen map location, or “hub,” ensuring a relevant audience to confidently share casual or personal thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Popping allows users to post Twitter-like content, such as spontaneous thoughts, news, or general conversation, but it uniquely allows users to post to physical places such as a school, park, stadium, gym, bar, church, restaurant, or store. By posting to physical places, users are connected to the community of people who care about that place rather than just their friends and followers. The result is new conversations, communities, and connections that are impossible or impractical on other social media platforms today.

Popping is here to create a better, more inclusive world by transforming how people connect, build community, and share life in every place,” says founder and CEO Jennifer Petrosky. “We already have ways to share the perfect photo, curated thoughts, updates to friends, or recommendations with our neighbor. What we lack is a connection to the people and life happening around us, wherever we are. I believe that when people can connect on what they already have in common—a place—we will focus less on our differences and more on the experiences, communities, and world we share.”

Popping uniquely gives users control of what they want to see on their feeds. With a single tap, one can view posts nearby their current location, posts in their favorite places, posts from those they follow, and trending topics globally. Whether looking to keep up with their friends, scope out a scene before they go out, know the latest cult favorite at their local store, or discuss tonight’s reality show or sporting event, Popping has created a place to share it all.

The Popping app offers features like posting text, images, and video content, following other users, and sending direct messages. Popping users can view or post to any hub, from anywhere, or post to the “Popping” hub when they want to share with the general Popping community rather than a specific location. Users can make their ping into a “pop,” which makes it disappear after a user-determined amount of time (from 1 minute to 24 hours) to keep their content fresh.

“Today, there’s a plethora of social media platforms for getting messages out and sharing photos,” says Popping user Eric. “But none let me have a local conversation that can be tailored to the physical communities and cities I’m in or about to visit. I’m excited to be able to finally engage in conversation about what’s going on and connect with new people in whatever place I happen to be in. This is the young Millennial and Generation Z’s response to Twitter.”

Influencers and businesses will benefit from Popping’s unique ability to put places at the center of the conversation, giving them an instant connection to their most relevant, local audience. Businesses can easily share timely news updates, special events, flash offers and sales, plus create polls to get real-time feedback from their community—all in their dedicated hub.

Popping is free to download and use and is now available on iOS and Android in the U.S. for users 13 and older.
