With nearly six decades of professional experience, Dr. Gilchrest has established herself as a standout figure in skin aging research on the cellular and molecular levels. Through her work, Dr. Gilchrest has advanced the field of dermatology.

From Mathematics to Dermatology

Before her career in medicine, Dr. Gilchrest pursued foundations in mathematics and molecular biology, then a new and rapidly developing field. She first earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1967, before applying her skill set in medicine. She earned a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard Medical School cum laude in 1971 and then joined Harvard Medical School's teaching hospitals as an intern and resident in internal medicine. A Career in Education and Medicine

After completing her education at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Gilchrest joined the institution as an instructor of dermatology, quickly advancing to become an associate professor, while also pursuing a postdoctoral fellowship with Professor Howard Green at MIT. She was then recruited to the newly established U.S. Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University School of Medicine.

In 1985, Dr. Gilchrest was recruited to the Boston University School of Medicine as chair of dermatology, becoming the first woman to chair a department of dermatology in the U.S. In 2008, she stepped down to focus on her new role as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. In 2014, Dr. Gilchrest accepted a position as consultant in dermatology at Mass General Brigham, a role she continues to hold today.

Professional and Creative Contributions

Dr. Gilchrest pioneered studies on aging skin at the cellular and molecular levels, examining the therapeutic and detrimental effects of ultraviolet light on the skin. Additionally, she discovered the effects of exogenous telomeric DNA sequences on cell behavior and cancer prevention in cell culture and animal models, aiming to better understand their potential effects on human patients.

Dr. Gilchrest has also contributed creatively to the field of dermatology by her lecturing, writing and hands-on training. Her textbook, "Skin Aging," published by Springer, pioneered the field. She also co-edited two editions of "Fitzpatrick's Dermatology in General Medicine," published by McGraw-Hill Medical. She has contributed more than 400 scholarly articles, editorials, textbook chapters and books to the medical literature.

Beyond her professional and creative career, Dr. Gilchrest is also actively involved in several civic and membership organizations. She has served in the leadership of many professional dermatology organizations and on the MIT Corporation from 1995 to 2005. She also participated extensively in educational programs through the American Academy of Dermatology and other organizations. Additionally, she is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, as well as multiple organizations, including the Society for Investigative Dermatology, the National Academy of Inventors and the Association for the Advancement of Science.

Plans for the Future
