Illinois Car Accident Lawyer Josh Rohrscheib Shares What to Do After a Major Accident in the Wake of Recent Crashes

Illinois has seen numerous car accidents throughout the state since the start of the new year.

Josh Rohrscheib, Illinois car accident lawyer with Bloomington personal injury firm Onward Injury Law discusses what the process should look like following a major car accident to ensure justice and compensation.

Winter weather is often the cause of increased accidents in Illinois. Icy roads and decreased visibility can often lead to serious one-person crashes, two-car collisions, and even multiple-car pile-ups on the state’s roads and interstates.

“Winter driving conditions add an extra layer to the dangers on the roadway,” Rohrscheib said. “Attentive driving during these conditions is important, but accidents can still happen despite our best efforts. Still, when someone is injured due to an accident that wasn’t their fault, they might be entitled to compensation.”

Rohrscheib, who has helped people all over Central Illinois who were injured or lost loved ones in car accidents, said diligence is required to handle all the details after a serious car accident. “While the circumstances around each accident are different, there are five key things every person should do right after a wreck has occurred,” he noted.

5 Things You Need To Do Immediately After a Car Crash

Get Safe

It’s important to take safety measures immediately after you’ve been in a car accident. Check on the medical status of all parties involved—including yourself—and seek emergency medical services by dialing 911 if needed.

Then, Rohrscheib said, assess your surroundings and make sure your vehicles and any debris aren’t creating a hazard for other drivers.

Bring in Local Law Enforcement

Whenever you’re in a car accident, the police should be involved. This is especially true if any parties involved in the crash are injured.

“It’s hard for us to keep a clear head when we’ve been in an accident,” Rohrscheib said. “But the police are trained in these types of situations and can ensure everything is handled properly—from getting needed emergency services to collecting evidence.”

Having a police report from the incident can bolster your personal injury claim when it comes time to take legal action against the at-fault party, Rohrscheib added.

Gather Contact Information and Evidence

While the police will collect statements as well as evidence, it’s always a good idea to collect accident-scene evidence for yourself as well. If you’re physically able to, make sure you have the contact information and copies of the statements of all parties involved, including witnesses.

“You should also take photos. Make sure you capture damage to all the cars and even take videos or pictures of your injuries, so you have a record,” Rohrscheib said.

Reach Out to Your Insurance Company

Your insurance company will likely communicate with the other driver’s insurance company regarding the incident. Once you’re able to, you should call your insurance provider to inform them of the accident and give them your account of what happened.

Contact an Illinois Car Accident Attorney

One of the most important things you’ll do after a car accident is to contact a personal injury lawyer that specializes in car accident cases, Rohrscheib said. You’ll be receiving medical care, getting your car fixed, or possibly even dealing with funeral arrangements for a loved one. You won’t want to have to add to your stress with the details of a car accident claim.

A car accident attorney can handle all of the legal legwork for you so you can focus simply on healing – whatever that may mean for your situation.
