Revenue growth

Reviewing a company’s long-term revenue performance reveals insights into its quality. Any business can experience short-term success, but top-performing ones sustain growth for years. Over the last five years, Pfizer’s demand was weak and its revenue declined by 1.7% per year, an underwhelming result.

Pfizer quarterly revenue

Long-term growth matters the most, but within healthcare, a half-decade historical view may miss recent innovations or disruptive industry trends. Pfizer’s annualized revenue growth of 2.6% over the last two years is above its five-year trend, a positive sign. Pfizer year-on-year revenue growth

Organic revenue provides more insight into the company’s revenue dynamics, stripping out one-time events like acquisitions and currency fluctuations that don’t accurately reflect its fundamentals. Over the last two years, Pfizer’s organic revenue averaged 3.8% year-on-year growth. This was in line with its two-year revenue growth, indicating that core operations, not acquisitions and divestitures, drove most of its results. Pfizer organic revenue growth

This quarter, Pfizer’s $16.58 billion of revenue was flat year on year but beat Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 4.6%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to decline by 5.1% over the next 12 months, according to S&P, a deceleration versus the last two years. This disappointing outlook indicates its products and services will face some demand headwinds. Still, the company is doing well on other measures of financial health.

Adjusted operating margin

Adjusted operating margin is one of the best measures of profitability because it shows how much a company earns after subtracting all core expenses, like marketing and research and development. It also removes various one-time costs to paint a better picture of normalized profits.

Pfizer has performed well over the last five years. It demonstrated high profitability for a healthcare business, with an average adjusted operating margin of 32%.

Looking at the trend in its profitability, Pfizer’s adjusted operating margin decreased by 8.3 percentage points over the last five years, but it rose by 2.1 percentage points on a two-year basis. Still, shareholders will want to see Pfizer become more profitable in the future.

Pfizer trailing 12-month operating margin (non-GAAP)

In Q3, Pfizer generated an adjusted operating margin of 20.4%, down 13.5 percentage points year on year. This contraction shows it was less efficient because its expenses increased relative to its revenue.

Earnings per share

We track the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) for the same reason as long-term revenue growth. Compared to revenue, however, EPS highlights whether a company’s growth is profitable.

Pfizer’s EPS declined by 4.1% annually over the last five years, more than its revenue. The company struggled because its fixed cost base made it difficult to adjust to shrinking demand.

Pfizer trailing 12-month EPS (non-GAAP)

Diving into the nuances of Pfizer’s earnings can give us a better understanding of its performance. As we mentioned earlier, Pfizer’s adjusted operating margin declined by 8.3 percentage points over the last five years. This was the most relevant factor (aside from the revenue impact) behind its lower earnings; interest expenses and taxes can also affect EPS but don’t tell us as much about a company’s fundamentals.

In Q3, Pfizer reported adjusted EPS of $0.87, in line with the same quarter last year. EPS comfortably topped analysts’ consensus estimates, a positive result for shareholders. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects Pfizer’s full-year EPS to shrink by 9.1% from $3.05 to $2.77, according to S&P.

Key takeaways from Pfizer’s Q3 results

A sizable beat on organic revenue expectations helped make this a good quarter for Pfizer, with revenue also topping Wall Street’s consensus estimates. The results had clear positives, but investors were likely hoping for more: shares edged lower 1.1% to $30.48 immediately after the release.

When assessing Pfizer at its current price, it’s important to consider its valuation, business quality and latest quarterly results. Read our full research report here (it’s free).
