What happened?
A number of stocks jumped in the afternoon session after Crude oil prices plunged more than 7% on hopes of Middle East diplomatic progress, lowering fuel costs for shoppers and freight costs inside the retail supply chain. In market coverage carried by CNBC, consumer discretionary advanced 3% during morning trade as capital rotated toward cyclical groups. Boat and RV dealers were among the stronger retail names, and grocery and pet retailers rose with them.
Crude prices retreated as Brent fell 7.7% to $104.66 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate dropped 7.3% to $96.50 after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the administration would prefer a peaceful resolution with Iran, CNBC reported. Cyclical momentum was reinforced by the Institute for Supply Management, which reported its factory activity gauge rose to 55.5 in October from 54.5 in September, exceeding the 54.5 consensus from economists surveyed by Reuters.
Fuel is the cost of using a boat or an RV, so a drop in crude changes the economics of the product Camping World and OneWater sell. Grocery and pet chains carry freight in the cost of filling a shelf. Although the survey’s prices-paid gauge registered an elevated 75.2, the pullback in benchmark crude eases both the cost of the trip to the store and the cost of using a big-ticket recreational good.
When energy overhead eases while domestic demand is still expanding, retailers capture traffic from a consumer who has more room in the weekly budget. That dynamic accelerates capital rotation out of defensives and into cyclical retail whose volumes improve as fuel and freight costs decline.

Zooming in on Sprouts (SFM)
Sprouts’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 13 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Sprouts and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 4 days ago when the stock dropped 19.3% on the news that the company reported third-quarter 2026 financial results and projected a contraction in full-year comparable store sales. According to a company press release, Sprouts Farmers Market projected full-year 2026 net sales growth of approximately 4.3% and comparable store sales of roughly (1.7)%. The grocer forecast full-year earnings before interest and taxes of roughly $605 million alongside diluted earnings per share of approximately $4.80. Sprouts also stated it expected 42 net new store openings and capital expenditures net of landlord reimbursements of approximately $310 million. Comparable store sales are a critical performance metric evaluating demand at established locations. A projected decline in same-store sales indicated weakening customer traffic and spending, triggering concerns about profitability despite unit expansion.
Sprouts is down 31.7% since the beginning of the year, and at $55.08 per share, it is trading 38.8% below its 52-week high of $90.02 from May 2026. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Sprouts’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,481.
