Revenue growth

Reviewing a company’s long-term revenue performance reveals insights into its quality. Even a poor business can perform well for one or two quarters, but a high-quality one grows for years. Tenet Healthcare’s revenue grew at a tepid 2.5% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years. That was an underwhelming result, but there are still things to like about Tenet Healthcare.

Tenet Healthcare quarterly revenue

Long-term growth matters most, but within healthcare, a half-decade historical view may miss recent innovations or disruptive industry trends. Tenet Healthcare’s annualized revenue growth of 2.8% over the last two years aligns with its five-year trend, suggesting its demand was consistently weak. Tenet Healthcare also reports same-store sales, which show how much revenue its established locations generate. Over the last two years, Tenet Healthcare’s same-store sales averaged 1.9% year-on-year growth. That pace is unsurprising, as it’s in line with revenue growth. This quarter, Tenet Healthcare reported year-on-year revenue growth of 6.5%, and its $5.63 billion of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 2.1%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 1.1% over the next 12 months, according to S&P, a slight deceleration versus the last two years. This projection is underwhelming and suggests its products and services will face some demand challenges. At least the company is tracking well in other measures of financial health.

Adjusted operating margin

Tenet Healthcare has managed its cost base well over the last five years. It demonstrated solid profitability for a healthcare business, producing an average adjusted operating margin of 16.3%.

Looking at the trend in its profitability, Tenet Healthcare’s adjusted operating margin rose by 7 percentage points over the last five years, as its revenue growth gave it operating leverage. The company’s two-year trajectory shows its performance was mostly driven by its recent improvements.

Tenet Healthcare trailing 12-month operating margin (non-GAAP)

In Q3, Tenet Healthcare generated an adjusted operating margin of 31.7%, up 15 percentage points year on year. This improvement shows it was more efficient.

Earnings per share

We track the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) for the same reason as long-term revenue growth. Compared to revenue, however, EPS highlights whether a company’s growth is profitable.

Tenet Healthcare’s EPS grew at an 18.3% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years, higher than its 2.5% annualized revenue growth. This indicates the company became more profitable on a per-share basis as it expanded.

Tenet Healthcare trailing 12-month EPS (non-GAAP)

A closer look at Tenet Healthcare’s earnings helps explain its performance. As mentioned earlier, Tenet Healthcare’s adjusted operating margin expanded by 7 percentage points over the last five years. Its share count also shrank by 25.9%. These are positive signs for shareholders because improving profitability and share buybacks boost EPS growth relative to revenue growth. Tenet Healthcare diluted shares outstanding

In Q3, Tenet Healthcare reported adjusted EPS of $6.64, up from $3.70 in the same quarter last year. That result was well above analysts’ consensus estimates, a positive outcome for shareholders. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects Tenet Healthcare’s full-year EPS to shrink by 5.4% from $22.28 to $21.07, according to S&P.

Key takeaways from Tenet Healthcare’s Q3 results

Tenet Healthcare delivered a decent quarter, with EPS above analysts’ consensus estimates and full-year EPS guidance well ahead of Wall Street’s consensus. But full-year revenue guidance fell slightly short of expectations. Investors were likely hoping for more: shares edged lower 1.9% to $263.50 immediately after the report.
