The organization’s move to an Expanse EHR marks a new era in patient-centered, independent care delivery.

MEDITECH today announced the successful implementation of its Expanse EHR at Schneck Medical Center (Seymour, IN), providing the acclaimed independent health system with a modern, mobile, and patient-centered EHR platform. This milestone represents a major strategic investment in the future of care delivery for the south-central Indiana community.

The transition to Expanse was the result of a rigorous and inclusive selection process involving over 300 stakeholders—including physicians, nurses, and administrative staff, with providers rating MEDITECH Expanse highest of all platforms. Key to Schneck’s decision was the flexibility of the browser-based system, allowing physicians to access the EHR on mobile devices like iPads.

A critical factor in the selection of Expanse was the functionality of the Traverse Exchange network, which enables Schneck providers to access, view, and act on patient data from surrounding hospitals that use another vendor's EHR. This capability significantly improves patient information sharing without sacrificing their autonomy as an independent health system, solving a long-standing challenge and ensuring continuity of care.

Schneck Medical Center Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer Dr. Ryan Stone emphasized the system’s strategic potential. “With Expanse, we’re not just using a new EHR; we’re investing in a platform built for now and for the future. From the data interoperability of Traverse Exchange, to mobile point-of-care and AI integrations, Expanse is helping us set the stage for smarter, more connected care that meets the needs of both providers and patients.”

To generate staff excitement and ensure the project’s success, Schneck launched “Schneck X: One Patient, One Record,” with an internal engagement campaign theme “Into the Expanse,” drawing on sci-fi inspiration to boost morale and participation throughout the health system.

The Expanse implementation replaced Schneck’s legacy MEDITECH system, in use since 1998, and included a simultaneous upgrade of both acute and ambulatory systems, as well as Home Health, and the addition of Labor and Delivery. Notably, the transition of labor and delivery workflows and an integrated system was a seamless process. Clinical adoption remains high, with primary care clinics and specialties quickly returning to full patient volumes.

Schneck plans to roll out mobile point-of-care solutions for nurses and is actively exploring the use of nurse handoff tools, as well as advanced features like AI solutions (including Expanse Navigator and ambient listening). These innovations will further support Schneck's clinicians' ability to work efficiently and deliver high-quality, personalized care that meets the needs of those in their community.
