This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (PCAM), the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) is calling on men to get screened with a simple blood test – the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test – that has the power to save their lives. When detected early, prostate cancer is 99% curable, yet far too many men are being diagnosed at later stages when treatment options are limited and survival rates decline.

Recent studies show that prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates are increasing, with a staggering number of late-stage diagnoses.¹ Further, in a new PCF-commissioned survey, 72% of men between the ages of 40 and 49 reported they had not been screened for prostate cancer. These findings depict an alarming trend: men are dying when their prostate cancer could be getting diagnosed and treated earlier.

“Early detection is the single most powerful tool we have to beat prostate cancer,” said Phillip Koo, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of PCF. “All men should begin annual PSA screenings at age 45, and men with a family history or Black men should start as early as age 40. Prostate cancer often has no symptoms until the disease is advanced, and screening may help detect cancer early when patients often have a number of treatment options available to them – many of which have been supported by PCF.”

PCF has helped fund the research for 14 FDA-approved treatments that extend and improve the lives of men with advanced disease, allowing for more treatment options than ever before. But the only way that men can benefit from these innovations is to reshape their attitudes and awareness around prostate health to make regular screenings a priority and treatment a possibility.

Every year, prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men in the U.S., a lifetime risk comparable to the 1 in 8 women who will face breast cancer. Just as women are urged to prioritize annual breast cancer screening, PCF stresses that men must treat annual PSA screening with the same level of importance as we continue to observe increases in diagnoses and deaths. In 2025, 313,000+ men are expected to be diagnosed and 36,000 projected to die from the disease.

“Too many fathers, brothers, and sons are lost because they were never screened,” said Gina Carithers, CEO and President of PCF. “We will not stop until every man knows the importance of a PSA test and has access to the resources they need, from screening to survivorship.”

In acknowledgment that addressing prostate health can be overwhelming, with a starting point difficult to identify, PCF has simplified the process. PCF’s new website, including a comprehensive PCAM page, offers action plans and resources to help improve understanding around prostate health. Additionally, PCF is expanding prostate cancer screening access by partnering with Man Cave Health and other organizations nationwide year-round.

The Prostate Cancer Awareness Survey was conducted online in the United States during July and August 2025 by Outcomes Insights on behalf of PCF.
