BARRINGTON, IL, USA - September 4, 2026 - Most businesses would never go two weeks without looking at their sales numbers, bank account or inventory. Yet Patrick McDonald says that is essentially how many companies' digital marketing campaigns are managed.

McDonald, founder of Barrington-based Chicago Style Media, built his agency around a simple idea: marketing accounts should not sit untouched for days or weeks at a time.

Every morning, Chicago Style Media receives an analysis of each client's marketing, including SEO visibility, search rankings, reviews, website issues, advertising performance and changes among their competitors. Specialized AI agents work around the clock to identify problems and opportunities. The agency's human team then decides what deserves action.

"The AI isn't running the company," McDonald said. "It's watching everything. Every morning we know what changed, what competitors are doing, where money may be getting wasted and where there may be an opportunity. Then experience and common sense take over."

That distinction is important to McDonald.

He believes many businesses have been sold on artificial intelligence as either a magic replacement for experienced marketers or simply another feature added to an agency's existing services. Chicago Style Media takes a different approach.

AI handles much of the continuous monitoring, research and analysis that historically required significant staff time. Experienced marketers remain responsible for strategy, budgets and major decisions.

That model also allows the agency to operate with less overhead.

"Every marketing agency is using AI now, or at least trying to," McDonald said. "The question is whether the client actually benefits from it. If technology makes the agency dramatically more efficient but the client still gets the same service, the same response time and the same bill, what changed?"

Looking Beyond Google's Recommendations

The agency takes a similarly skeptical approach to advertising automation.

Google Ads provides advertisers with automated recommendations involving bidding, keywords, targeting and other campaign settings. Google describes its optimization score as an estimate of how well an account is configured to perform toward its defined objectives.

Chicago Style Media does not automatically assume every recommendation should be followed.

"The platform can tell you how to make a campaign perform better according to the goals it has been given," McDonald said. "It can't sit across the table from the business owner and understand that they don't want job seekers, bargain shoppers, spam calls or a certain type of project. That's our job."

The agency combines campaign data with what McDonald calls the business's "demand cycle": when customers actually buy, call and make decisions.

That can mean reducing advertising rather than increasing it.

Chicago Style Media recently reviewed advertising for a local HVAC company that had accumulated campaigns and media purchases from multiple sales representatives over time. The agency reduced advertising spending by approximately 33 percent.

The company's revenue is currently up approximately 18 percent year to date despite the smaller advertising budget.

"We didn't discover some secret advertising platform," McDonald said. "There was just too much money going into things that weren't producing enough for the business. We cut the fat."

When AI Is Used the Wrong Way

McDonald believes AI can also hurt a company's marketing when it is used as a shortcut rather than a tool.

A local medical practice came to Chicago Style Media after paying approximately $4,000 per month for SEO services.

According to McDonald, much of the previous work consisted of two AI-generated blog posts each month with little participation or firsthand expertise from the physician.

Rather than continuing to produce more content, Chicago Style Media rebuilt the strategy around the practice's actual expertise, local market and search visibility.

Within six weeks, the practice's visibility across its target market increased by approximately 40 percent.

"AI can make somebody who knows what they're doing much faster," McDonald said. "It can also help somebody who doesn't know what they're doing produce bad work much faster. Those are two very different things."

Built After Seeing the Other Side of Advertising

McDonald's views were shaped long before Chicago Style Media began using AI.

A former United States Marine, he spent years leading advertising teams for ABC and NBC affiliates in markets around the country. His work has ranged from helping small local businesses, including a coffee shop in Alabama, to advertising surrounding U.S. presidential elections.

He has also spoken to business owners at marketing events nationally and internationally and taught advertising courses at the University of Alabama.

During his corporate career, McDonald said he repeatedly saw a conflict between what a local business needed and what a larger organization needed its sales teams to sell.

"There were times when corporate had a number to hit or a product they wanted pushed, and the local advertising team was expected to go sell it," he said. "That doesn't necessarily mean it was the best thing for the business buying it."

That experience eventually helped push him to build Chicago Style Media.

"I had spent years helping make large companies a lot of money," McDonald said. "I wanted to take what I had learned and put myself on the other side of the table."

The Marine Corps also shaped the operating philosophy behind the company.

McDonald describes it simply as discipline and accountability.

"If somebody trusts us with their business, I think we should have to prove ourselves again tomorrow," he said.

Experience Still Matters in an AI World

Despite the agency's heavy use of technology, McDonald argues that some of marketing's oldest principles have become even more important.

Understanding customer behavior. Knowing when demand rises and falls. Writing something another human being actually wants to read. Knowing when not to spend money. Recognizing that a lead is worthless if it is not the type of customer the business wants.

"There is absolutely still a place for old-school advertising and marketing principles in an AI world," McDonald said. "The tools changed. People didn't suddenly stop being people."

Chicago Style Media works with companies managing advertising budgets ranging from approximately $500 to $40,000 per month and offers several engagement levels, including short-term sprint programs that allow businesses to evaluate the agency's work before making a larger commitment.

One local client, Josh of JK Auto Glass, described his experience simply:

"Patrick did exactly what he said he would do and the phones have been ringing off the hook. I can't recommend Chicago Style Media enough."

Growing From Barrington Across Chicagoland

Chicago Style Media is based in Barrington and is a member of the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce. The agency has also joined the Huntley Area Chamber of Commerce and plans to continue building relationships with business organizations throughout Chicago and its suburbs.

McDonald said the growth strategy is intentionally local.

"We're not looking for somebody who wants to try something for 30 days and jump to the next agency," he said. "We want businesses where we can learn how they make money, understand their customers and keep improving what we're doing over time."
