Silent Protection: Our STHL PCBA Comprehensive ESD Control Program for Sensitive Electronic Assemblies

Understanding the ESD Threat - Modern Electronic Components are more sensitive than ever. Advanced CMOS devices, RF components, and high-density memory chips can be damaged by voltage levels as low as 30-50 volts—far below what humans can feel (typically 3,000+ volts). ESD damage can be catastrophic (immediate device failure) or latent (weakening the component and causing premature field failure). Both scenarios are unacceptable in high-quality manufacturing. Our ESD control program is designed to eliminate both risks through systematic prevention and continuous monitoring.

Facility-Wide ESD Protective Area - Our entire production facility is designated as an ESD Protective Area (EPA). This means every workstation, from incoming inspection to final packaging, is equipped with ESD-safe surfaces, flooring, and workstations. All floors in production areas are conductive and grounded, and our seating is ESD-safe throughout. The environment itself is designed to prevent charge generation and accumulation.

Personnel Grounding and Discipline - People are the primary source of ESD. Every employee working in or entering production areas is required to wear ESD-safe footwear or heel grounders, combined with conductive wrist straps connected to grounded workstations. Our continuous monitoring systems verify proper grounding at all times. All personnel undergo comprehensive ESD training and annual recertification, ensuring that every team member understands the importance of their role in component protection.

Material Handling and Packaging - Components and assemblies are never exposed to unprotected environments. We use only ESD-safe totes, trays, and carts for material transport. Our PCB magazine racks and shipping containers are all static-safe. When moving assemblies between workstations or storing them temporarily, they remain in ESD-protective packaging. For outgoing shipments, we utilize appropriate ESD shielding bags and packaging materials to ensure protection during transit to our clients.

Continuous Monitoring and Verification - Our ESD program is not static; it is continuously monitored and verified. We maintain a rigorous schedule of daily, weekly, and monthly checks:

Daily: Wrist strap and workstation grounding verifications

Weekly: Floor and worksurface resistance measurements

Monthly: Comprehensive facility audits including ionization system performanceAll measurements are documented and tracked for trends. Any deviation triggers immediate corrective action.

Ionization for Critical Areas - For particularly sensitive processes or components, we employ overhead ionizers that neutralize static charges on insulators and non-conductive materials. These systems are strategically placed at inspection stations, manual assembly areas, and any location where sensitive devices are exposed. Regular calibration ensures they maintain effective charge neutralization.

Supplier Compliance and Incoming Verification - Our ESD protection extends to our supply chain. We require our component and PCB suppliers to demonstrate compliance with ESD control standards. Upon receipt, we inspect incoming materials for proper ESD packaging and handle them within our EPA from the moment they are opened.

Compliance with International Standards - Our ESD control program is designed and implemented in accordance with ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1 standards. These internationally recognized frameworks provide the structure for our procedures and serve as independent validation of our commitment to component protection.

Invisible threats require visible commitment. Our comprehensive ESD control program ensures that the components we handle retain their full performance and reliability throughout the manufacturing process and into their operational life.

Protecting your investment from invisible threats is our priority. Contact us to learn how our ESD control program safeguards the reliability of your electronic assemblies.
