What happened?

Shares of refrigerant services company Hudson Technologies (NASDAQ: HDSN) fell 19.4% in the morning session after the company reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $59.4 million, impacted by a 9% decline in sales volume and a 17% drop in pricing.

According to a company press release, Hudson Technologies reported that weakness in hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) market prices drove the drop in pricing. Quarterly net income totaled $2.0 million, or $0.05 per diluted share, alongside a 25% gross margin. The company finished the period debt-free with $35.3 million in cash while reaffirming its full-year gross margin target. The simultaneous decline in both customer volume and market pricing highlighted ongoing headwinds in the refrigerant sector, which appeared to weigh heavily on sentiment.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks. Is now the time to buy Hudson Technologies? Access our full analysis report here, it’s free.

What is the market telling us

Hudson Technologies’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 14 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Hudson Technologies and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 23 days ago when the stock gained 2.6% on the news that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published a notice allocating calendar year 2027 hydrofluorocarbon allowances to the company.

The agency signed the notice on October 1, 2026, and published it in the Federal Register on October 6, 2026. The allocations govern production and consumption under the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act of 2020. PR Newswire reported that a report projected the A2L refrigerant market to grow from $4.02 billion in 2026 to $5.92 billion by 2031. According to the report, value chain consolidation included an acquisition by the company to expand its refrigerant sales, distribution, recovery, and reclamation capabilities.

Hudson Technologies is down 35.1% since the beginning of the year, and at $4.42 per share, it is trading 51.9% below its 52-week high of $9.19 from October 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Hudson Technologies’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,247.
