Woods is a long-standing brand with a storied past of over a century of firsts in exploration. In the 19th and 20th centuries, we designed cutting-edge gear for some of the most well-known explorers and expeditions in the world.
Today, we build on that legacy to craft reliable outdoor gear and apparel for modern-day adventures, from family campers to weekend warriors. Woods gear is at home everywhere from frontcountry campsites in your local state park, to backcountry hikes, and even in your own backyard!
At Woods, you’ll find quality, durable outdoor equipment made with the modern adventurer in mind, all fine-tuned from over a century of experience in the outdoors.
Our History
Founded in 1885 by James W. Woods, Woods has decades upon decades of experience designing outdoor apparel and gear. During this extensive history, we’ve supported countless pivotal expeditions in the world of outdoor adventure and exploration.
Our gear was carried by many of the prospectors in the Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899), which saw over 100,000 prospectors travel to the rugged Klondike Yukon in search of gold. We outfitted Roald Amundsen and his crew as they became the first in history to navigate the Northwest Passage, connecting Greenland to Alaska in 1906. We equipped Allied soldiers with tents and sleeping bags during World War I. In 1925, we supported the first ascent of North America’s second-tallest mountain, Mt. Logan (19,551 feet). In 1950, we supported the first circumnavigation of North America, and in 1982, we supported the first Canadian team to summit Mt. Everest (29,032 feet).
Woods actually pioneered an early example of the modern sleeping bag, with our iconic “sleeping robes.” These sleeping bags played a role in dozens of monumental expeditions in the 20th century, such as Theodore Roosevelt Jr.’s 1925 expedition through Central Asia and Admiral Byrd’s three Antarctic expeditions. They’re even featured in the iconic Hemingway novel For Whom the Bell Tolls due to their use during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
When a customer buys a Woods product, they’re playing a role in our storied legacy. They’re trucking with backpacks, snoozing in sleeping bags, and bedding down in tents that have a lineage stretching back to some of the most famous explorers and adventurers of all time.
Why We’re Unique
Woods has been around for generations, but in the modern day, outdoor adventure has become accessible to everyone, not just a handful of well-funded, prestigious expeditions.
Today, Woods marries the best of both worlds. We take the quality and durability of the expedition-level equipment we crafted in years past and blend it with the accessibility and affordability of the outdoor world today.
Our gear blends refined, heritage-inspired style with modern-day performance and convenience, all fine-tuned over decades upon decades of use, from the trenches of WWI to the ramparts of Mt. Everest to the icy tundras of the Arctic. These are meticulously-crafted outdoor products, with warmth, durability, and quality honed from 130+ years of experience.
