Global HR outsourcing specialist HumanX HR flags AI governance, skills-based hiring and psychosocial safety as top priorities for business leaders this year

-- HumanX HR, an HR outsourcing agency working with multinational companies across various sectors, today released its analysis of the seven HR trends set to define workplaces in 2026, warning that businesses moving too slowly on AI governance and employee wellbeing compliance could face real legal and reputational exposure.

Drawing on insights from its work with clients internationally, HumanX HR found that AI, economic uncertainty, regulatory change and shifting employee expectations are converging to reshape how businesses hire, develop and retain talent, regardless of where they're based.

"2026 is the year HR stops treating AI as a side experiment and starts treating it as a governed, accountable part of how the business runs," said Hich Nasr, Partner at HumanX HR.

AI Governance Becomes Non-Negotiable

Governments in multiple jurisdictions are moving to require clearer disclosure of automated decision-making in hiring, and employers remain legally exposed if a recruitment tool screens out candidates based on protected attributes. Yet HR leaders are often left out of the room when AI strategy gets decided.

Candidate sentiment is shifting too. Research has shown a meaningful share of candidates would reject a job with AI-heavy recruitment, with 66% of US adults saying they would not want to apply for a job that uses AI in hiring decisions.

"The AI arms race does not benefit either side... Recruiters can't go through thousands of applications. Job seekers are demoralised to never hear from a human"

Skills-Based Hiring Gains Ground

A growing number of hiring managers globally are shifting toward skills-based hiring rather than filtering candidates by degrees or past job titles, a move that data suggests can expand talent pools significantly and improve diversity outcomes.

"For small and mid-sized businesses that can't win a bidding war on salary, skills-based hiring is one of the few levers that genuinely works," Nasr said. "It widens the pool, and it helps you find value in the people you've already got."

Psychosocial Safety Moves From Policy to Compliance

The most significant shift is regulatory. Psychosocial and mental health safety are now treated with the same seriousness as physical safety, and in 2026 that stopped being theoretical. Australian employers carry a legal duty to identify psychosocial hazards, assess the risks and document their controls. A general wellbeing statement doesn't satisfy that duty.

"A line in the handbook about 'supporting employee wellbeing' won't cut it anymore," Nasr said. "Regulators want to see the risk assessment, the documented controls, and evidence you're actually reviewing whether they work."

Additional Trends Identified

The report also highlights four further shifts reshaping HR strategy in 2026:

  • Flexible work as policy, not perk - clearly documented arrangements are replacing ad hoc, manager-by-manager discretion.
  • Data-driven HR decisions - workforce analytics are replacing gut instinct in retention, engagement and performance strategy.
  • Human skills as HR's edge - demand for empathy, judgement and communication is projected to grow sharply as automation reshapes other tasks.
  • Proactive over reactive HR - businesses that address the highest-risk areas first, rather than attempting every reform at once, are best placed to adapt.

"No business needs to solve all seven of these at once," Nasr said. "Start with the area carrying the most risk or the most obvious opportunity, and build from there. That's how momentum builds."
