SINGAPORE - Nuffield Dental is expanding the use of artificial intelligence in preventive oral healthcare, bringing its ScanO AI-powered oral health screening technology beyond the traditional dental clinic and closer to where people live, work and gather.
Launched in March 2026, ScanO is a kiosk-style screening system that provides users with a rapid snapshot of their oral health. According to Nuffield Dental, the technology can screen for more than 40 oral conditions in approximately 12 seconds, providing information that may help identify areas requiring professional assessment.
The initiative forms part of Nuffield Dental's broader vision of using technology to encourage earlier engagement with oral healthcare. The group is exploring opportunities to deploy AI-powered screening kiosks in workplaces, schools, healthcare institutions, community venues and other public spaces.
Making preventive oral healthcare more accessible
Many people visit the dentist only when they have pain or notice a problem. Nuffield Dental believes accessible screening technology can support prevention by helping people identify oral health concerns earlier.
ScanO uses artificial intelligence and image analysis to screen visible tooth surfaces for signs associated with a range of oral conditions. The technology is designed to provide a rapid visual assessment that can help facilitate conversations between patients and dental professionals.
"What excites me most about ScanO is its potential to make preventive oral healthcare more accessible. Since launching in March 2026, we have been using this AI-powered kiosk to provide rapid oral health screening, with the technology able to screen for more than 40 oral conditions in around 12 seconds," said Dr Samintharaj Kumar of Nuffield Dental.
"Importantly, ScanO is a screening tool and not a replacement for a dentist - every diagnosis still requires assessment and confirmation by a qualified dental practitioner."
The distinction between screening and diagnosis is central to the technology's role. ScanO is intended to help identify visible areas that may warrant further attention, rather than replace a comprehensive clinical examination.
Some dental conditions may require additional assessment, including clinical examination or diagnostic imaging. The AI screening system works as a complementary tool, with qualified dental professionals remaining responsible for diagnosis and treatment decisions.
AI and the future of preventive healthcare
Beyond screening for common oral health concerns such as tooth decay, gum disease, tooth wear and fractured teeth, Dr Samintharaj Kumar believes artificial intelligence could play a broader role in encouraging earlier healthcare intervention.
"We believe the future of healthcare lies in bringing preventive care closer to where people live and work," Dr Samintharaj Kumar said. "Our vision is to see AI-powered oral health screening available in workplaces, schools, community venues and other public spaces, helping people become more aware of their oral health and encouraging earlier professional assessment when needed."
Nuffield Dental's approach reflects a growing interest in the relationship between oral health and overall health. Certain systemic health conditions can present with signs or symptoms in the oral cavity, making oral health an important component of broader healthcare.
While an oral screening system cannot diagnose systemic diseases, identifying unusual or concerning oral findings may encourage individuals to seek appropriate professional assessment.
Dr Samintharaj Kumar believes this connection will become increasingly important as healthcare moves towards more integrated and preventive models.
"I also believe the future of healthcare lies in integrating oral health with general health. The mouth is the gateway to the body, and many systemic diseases first present with signs and symptoms in the oral cavity. By bringing medical and dental care closer together, we can identify problems earlier, improve overall health outcomes and deliver more holistic patient care," he said.
Bringing screening into the community
Nuffield Dental is also exploring the use of ScanO outside traditional healthcare settings. The organisation sees potential for the technology to be deployed in offices, schools, community spaces, healthcare institutions and other locations where people can access screening.
The aim is to reduce barriers to accessing preventive care by bringing screening into the environments where people work and live.
Nuffield Dental has begun taking the technology into community settings, including a planned pilot at a community health event organised by Mediacorp, the Hindu Endowments Board, the Singapore Dental Health Foundation and Nuffield Holdings.
The initiative demonstrates how emerging technology can be used not only within clinical environments, but also as an engagement tool to encourage members of the public to take a proactive approach to their health.
Technology that complements clinicians
Nuffield Dental emphasises that introducing AI into oral healthcare aims not to replace dentists, but to complement their expertise.
AI-assisted screening can process and present information rapidly, while dental professionals provide the clinical judgement required to interpret findings, confirm diagnoses and recommend appropriate treatment.
According to Nuffield Dental, the ScanO platform has screened more than 1.6 million people worldwide, reflecting the growing application of AI-assisted screening technology in healthcare.
For Dr Samintharaj Kumar, the long-term opportunity extends beyond the technology itself.
"AI should complement, not replace, clinicians, and ultimately help us deliver more accessible and holistic healthcare," he said.
As artificial intelligence continues to develop across the healthcare sector, Nuffield Dental's ScanO initiative represents an emerging approach to preventive dentistry - combining digital screening technology with professional clinical expertise, bringing oral health awareness closer to the wider community.
The group invites organisations, workplaces, schools, healthcare institutions, and community groups interested in deploying AI-powered oral health screening kiosks to explore potential partnerships.
