ELK RIVER, Minn. - Kiser Construction, a damage restoration contractor based in Elk River, is reminding north and northwest metro homeowners that help does not take the holidays off. A Kiser employee answers the company's 24/7 emergency line, (612) 518-8852, any hour, any day. That includes Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
The timing matters. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,446 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day in 2023. That is 388 percent above the daily average. Christmas Day and Christmas Eve rank second and third. Between 2019 and 2023, cooking caused 80 percent of home fires on Thanksgiving Day. Closer to home, the Minnesota State Fire Marshal reports that cooking fires caused nearly $6 million in damage across the state in 2024.
"The hardest calls we get come on holidays, because people assume no one will pick up," said Darren Kiser, owner of Kiser Construction. "When you call us, you talk to someone who works here and can get a crew moving. You don't talk to a call center."
Kiser keeps crew members on call around the clock. After a fire, the first job is to make the home safe: board-up, tarping, and securing the structure. That step matters more in a Minnesota November. A house opened up by fire loses its heat fast, so water from the fire hoses can freeze and so can the pipes. IICRC certified technicians then handle the smoke, the soot, and the water left behind by firefighting. The same team rebuilds the home. One project file and one point of contact carry the job from the first call to the final walkthrough. Homeowners can read what happens when Kiser responds to an emergency call on the company's website.
Not every problem is an emergency. Kiser says to use the emergency line for any fire, even a small one. The same goes for a flooded basement, a burst pipe, a tree through the roof, a vehicle into the house, or a roof collapse from snow. Hail damage, ice dams, mold, and window or gutter repairs can wait. Call the office line, (763) 633-2010, on the next business day.
Kiser also passed along three NFPA tips for the holiday kitchen. Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Keep a lid next to the pan. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over it and turn off the burner. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. NFPA also discourages turkey fryers that use cooking oil.
"If a fire does start, get everyone out and call 911 first," Kiser said. "Call us after the fire department clears the house. We'll come out, holiday or not, and the inspection is free."
