The Halls raised their six children in Utah’s mountains, where adventure was part of family life. Skiing, backpacking, wake surfing, rock climbing, canyoneering, fishing, and countless other outdoor adventures filled their years together. But adventure comes with risk. During the years when their children were teenagers and young adults, the family made 12 visits to emergency rooms. Through it all, Captain was there when someone needed comfort. He offered unconditional companionship that people often associate with a therapy dog.
And then there was the airplane crash.
CAPTAIN AND THE AIRPLANE CRASH
While vacationing in Mexico, the Hall family and friends were traveling in a private airplane. The plane crashed at night in mountainous terrain during a snowstorm. Several people were critically injured. The dramatic survival story made national news, and the Hall family was later invited to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show to share their experience. For the Hall family, Captain was a source of stability and unconditional love during a period when life had suddenly changed.
He was there for the laughter, the accidents, the celebrations, the adventures, the difficult days, and the moments when someone simply needed a friend.
AND THEN THERE WAS THE DUCK
Perhaps one of the most unusual relationships in the book was Captain’s friendship with a duck. She slept in his doghouse, shared his food, and received his affection and protection. The Halls lived in a mountain valley where predators claimed some of their other animals, including another duck and their rabbits. Captain wouldn’t let animals near his duck.

About the Authors
Randy and Helen Hall are Utah authors who have spent much of their lives raising their family in the mountains and embracing the adventures of the outdoors. Randy is an entrepreneur with an MBA from Pepperdine University and has founded and operated several businesses. Helen earned her degree from Brigham Young University and devoted much of her life to raising their six children while also working as an interior designer.
Together, Randy and Helen have written several books, drawing upon their experiences with family, adventure, faith, adversity, and the unexpected miracles that can occur along the way.
