New memoir, "Opium et Moi" by Robert H. Miller is released, the inspiring story of developing one of the world’s most iconic perfumes with Yves Saint Laurent

“Opium et Moi: Behind the Label, Yves Saint Laurent” by Robert H. Miller has been released worldwide. This 389-page memoir is the author’s firsthand account of working in the world of high fashion, fragrance, and big business to develop the iconic Opium perfume with the incomparable Yves Saint Laurent. Pulling back the curtain on this exclusive, often insular society, Miller shows the hard work, conflict, and exhilarating passion that happens behind the scenes.

Working closely with Yves, his partner Pierre, and countless others (including legendary figures in fashion, Hollywood, and beyond), Miller’s decades-long career has brought him around the world and connected him with industry leaders, providing a unique perspective on the inner workings of the social and business elite.

This memoir, which chronicles Miller’s early career experiences with Charles of Ritz through the tumultuous development of Opium and its surrounding drama, draws readers into an exciting world of demanding creatives, high pressure business deals, quirky personalities, and massive success. It also provides compelling insight into the ups and downs of some of the biggest names in cosmetics, showing the hidden complexities and stressful inner workings of these major brands.

Miller’s commitment to a candid, honest retelling of his experiences offers an inspiring portrait of perseverance and integrity. By sharing the highs and lows of his expansive career, he reminds readers that lasting happiness comes from gratitude and appreciation for processes and people, not the transient monetary success of a company.

This memoir is more than the history of Opium. It is a riveting, surprising story of art and commerce that sheds light on a competitive, influential industry and the big personalities that drive it forward - all told from the perspective of someone who lived through it.

From the back cover:

Every perfume is a unique work of art, no different than a piece of music or a painting in its ability to evoke feelings in its audience. In 1976, Yves Saint Laurent fell in love with the idea of creating a new perfume that would convey the lush, sensual mood of the name he had already chosen, OPIUM.

Working with Yves, his personal and business partner Pierre, and so many others in the world of high fashion and fragrance could be exhilarating, infuriating, and often, a simmering pot-au-feu threatening to boil over. This narrative takes you behind the scenes, providing a glimpse of that fascinating world and the people who kept it spinning.

It is a highly personal story, and one I know well. It is my story.
