"We delivered strong operating performance this quarter, with continued progress diversifying our products and customer base," said Jeff Noordhoek, chief executive officer of Nelnet. "We increased our dividend and continued to repurchase shares, while remaining focused on investing in our businesses and creating long-term value. In October, we announced FACTS Compass, which will help scholarship granting organizations support students in public and private schools through the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit. BenefitEd offers employers a payroll deduction option for the program. We also announced the acquisition of Entab, a school management technology provider in India, expanding our education technology business internationally."
Revenue growth
A company’s long-term revenue performance is one signal of its overall quality. Any business can deliver a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long term. Nelnet’s revenue grew at a sluggish 3.5% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years, falling short of the financials sector benchmark.

Long-term growth matters most, but within financials, a half-decade historical view may miss recent interest rate changes, market returns and industry trends. Nelnet’s annualized revenue growth of 8% over the last two years is above its five-year trend, suggesting some bright spots.
Note: Quarters not shown were determined to be outliers because they were impacted by outsized investment gains/losses that are not indicative of the recurring fundamentals of the business.
This quarter, Nelnet missed Wall Street’s consensus estimates and reported an uninspiring 5.9% year-on-year revenue decline, generating $410 million in revenue.
Key takeaways from Nelnet’s Q3 results
A revenue miss left Nelnet’s quarter weaker overall, despite some clear earnings positives: Net interest income came in well above analysts’ consensus estimates, and EPS also topped Wall Street’s consensus. Shares remained flat at $126.86 immediately after the results.
Nelnet’s earnings report left more to be desired. Assessing whether this quarter has created an investment opportunity requires a broader view. The latest quarter matters, but longer-term business quality and valuation matter more when deciding whether to invest in this stock.
