What happened?

Shares of biotechnology company Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) fell 22.7% in the afternoon session after the company's partial Phase 3 data for its personalized cancer vaccine leaked ahead of a planned presentation this weekend, and the stock sold off hard even though the results themselves look positive. According to CNBC, shares fell as much as 25% after an early look at the vaccine Moderna is developing with Merck, intismeran autogene, showed up online before it was supposed to be presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology meeting.

The leaked trial, INTerpath-001, tested the vaccine plus Merck’s Keytruda against Keytruda alone in melanoma patients after surgery. Merck later confirmed the main points: the combination cut the risk of recurrence or death by 42%, and the risk of the cancer spreading or death by 38%. After two years, 82.2% of patients on the combination were alive and cancer-free, versus 70% on Keytruda alone, in a study of 1,137 patients. No new safety issues were flagged.

The shares closed the day at $201.80, down 18.3% from the previous close.

What is the market telling us

Moderna’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 65 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Moderna and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 3 days ago when the stock gained 2.2% on the news that investors rotated into defensive assets and priced in rising expectations that midterm election outcomes could reverse recent federal spending cuts. Capital has increasingly shifted toward defensive sectors, which are widely recognized for delivering resilient earnings and dependable cash flows during times of macroeconomic uncertainty as reported by Axios.

Beyond this safe-haven rotation, market sentiment was bolstered by growing expectations that Democrats could gain ground in upcoming midterm elections. Analysts indicated that a political shift could lead to the rollback or easing of federal healthcare spending cuts implemented under President Trump's 2025 spending bill. A potential reversal of those reductions is viewed positively by investors, as it would protect vital funding streams and preserve demand for pharmaceuticals, clinical care, and related healthcare services. With regulatory headwinds potentially diminishing and macroeconomic caution lingering, healthcare equities saw broad-based buying across the industry.

Moderna is up 551% since the beginning of the year, but at $201.05 per share, it is still trading 18.2% below its 52-week high of $245.81 from October 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Moderna’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $615.62.
