CaseTutor has published The State of Case Interview Performance, first edition 2026, analyzing 390 practice interviews conducted from January 1 through August 10, 2026. The study found that only 2 of 379 candidates produced a framework rated above adequate. It also identified quantitative analysis and mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive structuring as the two most common areas of weak performance.

The analysis was drawn from 2,279 practice interviews recorded on the platform since March 2025. Each session was divided into four phases: opening, structure, analysis and recommendation. CaseTutor assessed performance within those phases to identify where candidates lost structure, calculation accuracy or independence as an interview progressed.

Framework logic produced the study's sharpest result. Although only 20.8% of candidates were rated weak on whether a framework looked sensible and organized, 71.2% were rated weak or very weak on MECE quality. The difference suggests that many structures appear orderly but contain overlapping branches, leave gaps or fail to address the case objective.

Quantitative analysis ranked as the most common failure mode, with 75.4% of assessed candidates rated weak or very weak. Data interpretation was stronger, at 32.8% weak or very weak. The report distinguishes between reading what a chart shows and completing calculations while explaining their business meaning under time pressure.

Candidate independence also declined later in the interview. The share rated weak or very weak rose from 4.1% in the opening phase to 26.6% in analysis. Among candidates who reached analysis, 34.8% required at least one prompt during that phase, while 39.2% of all interviews required a prompt somewhere in the session.

Completion did not remove the quality gap. Overall, 65.4% of candidates reached a recommendation. Candidates rated weak on MECE quality reached that phase 65.9% of the time, compared with 69.7% among those rated adequate or better, a difference the report describes as within the statistical noise.

The findings point toward practice that tests execution rather than framework recall alone. Candidates can be asked to defend why branches do not overlap, work calculations aloud, state assumptions and choose the next analysis without being directed. The report describes practice behavior, not performance in live employer interviews, and CaseTutor notes that people may abandon a practice session in ways they would not during a real interview.
