The American Cornhole Organization: Shaping the Future of Cornhole

The origins of the game we know as ‘cornhole’ remain speculative, but its transformation into a widely recognized sport can be traced to 2004 in Cincinnati, Ohio. That year, Frank Geers, a marketing professional from the city, discovered cornhole at an NFL tailgate. Inspired by its potential, he began exploring how to popularize the game and introduce it to a national audience.

In 2005, the American Cornhole Organization (ACO) was founded to standardize cornhole products, rules, and tournament structures, ultimately positioning itself as the sport’s official governing body. Now celebrating its 20th season, the ACO continues to refine the game, introducing innovations in gameplay, the player experience, and prize structures.

Initially, cornhole bags were filled with corn, which posed several challenges, including mold, wear, and uneven play. The ACO revolutionized the game by introducing resin pellet-filled bags and a two-sided fabric design. These improvements sparked a multi-million-dollar industry for cornhole bag makers. Additionally, ACO-set standards for durable boards, scoring equipment, and court dimensions allowed for consistent play and became the reference for players worldwide.

With standardized equipment came the chance to enhance player engagement. The ACO pioneered singles competition in a game that had primarily focused on doubles play. The establishment of the ACO World Singles and Doubles Championships laid the groundwork for a national tour. Today, the ACO has held thousands of regional tournaments and over 40 major events annually, offering prize purses from $5,000 to $100,000. These tournaments culminate in the ACO World Championships, held annually in rotating U.S. cities. Divisions such as Juniors, Women’s, Seniors, Co-Ed, Adaptive, and more compete for top honors, including the crowning of an ACO King or Queen of Cornhole.

The ACO also hosts unique events like the Lifetimers Tournament, where players who’ve committed to the ACO with a tattoo receive free lifetime membership. Currently, 160 players have earned this status. These players can also participate in the ACO Pro Series SKINS Cornhole tournaments, featuring higher stakes and a new gameplay twist. Terms like frame games, airmail box, and tier play, all pioneered by the ACO, have become standard practice in cornhole to elevate competition and improve player skills.

The ACO has made significant strides in taking cornhole off the court and into the media. In 2013, the sport was featured on ESPN’s Wider World of Sports, and in 2014, the ACO World Championships were broadcast on SportsCenter. The organization has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal and collaborated on the 2010 film Cornhole: The Movie. The ACO’s YouTube Channel, Hole Nation (hosted by Reality TV star Rich Pyle), and the longest-running cornhole podcast/webcast, TACO, further solidify its presence in mainstream media. In 2019, the ACO declared the last Saturday of July as World Cornhole Day, marking a milestone for the sport.

Through ongoing partnerships with adaptive sports organizations, AAU, and the National Senior Games, and even its own Cookbook, the ACO continues to expand cornhole’s reach globally. The best days for the sport and its players are yet to come.
