-- Snowstorms.ca has launched a new Ontario-wide local weather platform designed to make it easier for people across the province to access local weather forecasts, conditions, alerts, and educational weather information in one place.
The launch introduces dedicated weather pages for municipalities across Ontario, providing location-specific weather information including current conditions, temperatures, forecasts, and other relevant weather data.
A spokesperson from Snowstorms said the following:
“We want people to be able to get the most up-to-date information about weather conditions in their area, especially in Ontario, which is famous for extreme cold conditions in the winter and excessive heat in the summer. Users can explore weather across various vectors, including snow and ice levels, rain conditions, heat conditions, visibility conditions and so on. It's all designed to give them a heads-up and what’s coming next.”
The launch comes ahead of the 2026–27 Canadian winter season and represents the first major phase in the development of Snowstorms.ca as a broader Canadian weather resource.
Ontario is the initial focus of the local weather platform. However, Snowstorms.ca plans to continue expanding its weather coverage and educational resources over time, with the long-term goal of providing useful weather information for communities across Canada.
The extent of information on the website is already significant. Users can learn about the science of the weather in Ontario, the safety issues that might affect them in the future (including what to do in a whiteout), and get detailed information on how weather forecasting works (including its limitations).
It's also possible to read more about historic winter storms that have affected the region. For example, Snowstorms details the Blizzard of 1977, which was one of the most severe winter storms in southern Ontario's history. Occurring between January 28 and 31 that year, powerful winds led to whiteout conditions and snowdrifts across the Niagara Peninsula and many people found themselves isolated, and thousands of motorists were stuck on the road.
The 2011 Groundhog Day blizzard was another significant event, running from January 31 to February 3. It's widely regarded as the largest and most disruptive winter storm in North American history, leading to widespread travel disruption all the way from Texas to Atlantic Canada.
These extreme events highlight the importance of an Ontario-specific platform like Snowstorms.ca that can provide local people with critical weather-related information ahead of the winter season.
