Postpartum depression and related emotional challenges affect many new mothers, often due to gaps in medical support beyond what family and friends can provide. KyCOMPASS addresses this need by offering healthcare providers free access to psychiatric consultations, education, and resources to improve maternal mental health.

-- According to the Cleveland Clinic, postpartum depression affects up to 1 in 7 women. But even without postpartum depression, many women experience negative emotions after childbirth, such as isolation, overwhelm, and anxiety, and these can evolve into mental health issues that cause serious problems in the future. This is unfortunate, as this period should be a time of joy and positivity for new parents.

A lot of negative emotions arise from a lack of support, even if the parents have loving family members and friends. There are certain medical concerns that a social network can't address, and having the constant guidance of a medical professional can make a huge difference.

Kentucky Consultation & Outreach Program for Maternal Psychiatry and Support Services (KyCOMPASS) fills this need by providing a platform that connects medical providers with pregnant and postpartum mothers. Not only can OB/GYNs utilize their services, but also family medicine physicians, pediatricians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, midwives, doulas, and even social workers and care managers can, too. Basically, any Kentucky medical provider can use KyCOMPASS, and it's a free service as well.

This organization was created by a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals who are passionate about supporting moms with quality perinatal care. Their goal is to expand health professionals' capacity to improve the mental health and substance use disorder outcomes for new mothers. This is achieved through psychiatric access, provider education, and support services that are given in a timely and compassionate fashion.

KyCOMPASS has experienced, trauma-informed clinicians who can provide near real-time or scheduled psychiatric consultations to healthcare providers. They can assist with mental health issues that may complicate parenthood through the use of professional screening tools and clinical resources. In addition, there's referral support to trusted perinatal and mental health providers across the state.

To help medical professionals further, KyCOMPASS has provider-facing toolkits and educational materials; this includes a perinatal consultation line that's available during regular business hours on weekdays, as well as print-ready materials and a resource hub. They can also utilize optional education and training that's tailored specifically for care teams. Healthcare providers can take advantage of periodic webinars, too.

Do note that if users are a mother in distress or a healthcare provider concerned about one, KyCOMPASS cannot help with those situations. Instead, they're advised to call 988 for 24/7 professional support or 911 for an emergency.

KyCOMPASS is a 100% secure and HIPAA-compliant platform, so users can rest assured that any information given will remain confidential. Their partnerships include the Kentucky Perinatal Quality Collaborative (KyPQC), the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), Postpartum Support International (PSI), and the Kentucky Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Task Force (KyMMM).

About the company: KyCOMPASS (Kentucky Consultation & Outreach Program for Maternal Psychiatry and Support Services) is a statewide initiative dedicated to improving maternal mental health outcomes across Kentucky. Supported by the Kentucky Department for Public Health and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
