Gaize Appoints AI Visionary Dr. Lou Kratz as Lead Machine Learning Engineer

Gaize, the leader in drug impairment detection technology, announced today the appointment of Dr. Lou Kratz as Lead Machine Learning Engineer. A PhD computer scientist with over a decade of experience building production AI at scale, Kratz brings exactly the kind of technical firepower that positions Gaize for its next chapter of rapid growth.

Kratz arrives with a pedigree that few can match. He holds a PhD in Computer Vision from Drexel University, where he published at top-tier research venues and shaped the next generation of AI practitioners as an adjunct professor teaching graduate-level Computer Vision and Computational Photography. That combination, researcher, educator, and builder, is rare.

Before joining Gaize, Kratz was the fifth employee at Curalate, a Philadelphia-based visual analytics startup where he single-handedly built the company's core AI capabilities. His accomplishments there were extremely impressive: a patent, a billion-scale image deduplication system, and a visual search engine that scaled to hundreds of millions of images. He remained through Curalate's successful acquisition by Bazaarvoice in 2020.

At Bazaarvoice, Kratz rose to Senior Principal AI Engineer, where his impact was nothing short of transformative for the organization. He built the company's MLOps platform, chaired its AI Center of Excellence, and drove generative AI adoption across the entire product portfolio. His infrastructure work delivered an 82% cost reduction, a milestone so significant it was featured as an AWS customer case study. When Bazaarvoice was sold to Thomas H. Lee Partners, Kratz served as the company's sole AI/ML technical expert through the entire transaction.

“This hire signals exactly where Gaize is headed. Lou doesn’t just understand machine learning — he’s built the systems that redefine what’s possible. Having him on our team means we can move faster and create the next generation of AI models that will drive the Gaize product. We’re building AI that brings people home safely every night – nothing could be more important.”

Kratz is equally energized about the opportunity. “Gaize is solving a real problem that matters — making workplaces safer, ensuring fairness for workers, and giving people objective tools where only guesswork existed before,” said Kratz. “The technical challenges here are exactly the kind I love: high-stakes, human-centered, and impact driven. I’m excited to build.”

Kratz is also a recognized voice in the broader AI community. A frequent speaker at AWS Summits, Arize AI conferences, and other premier industry events, he is also the creator of QType, an open-source domain-specific language designed for rapid AI application prototyping. He doesn’t just build for companies — he builds for the community.

The addition of Dr. Kratz to the Gaize team is an important step in building out a no-compromises team doing work with momentous impact.
