Shakira Millar, Care Coordinator, Lead Therapist, and co-founder of Behavior Change LLC, is amplifying her voice for a cause close to her heart: improving access to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for children with developmental challenges such as autism. With over a decade of experience in ABA therapy, Millar’s mission is to raise awareness about the importance of early intervention and advocate for accessible, personalized support for children and families.
“Early intervention with ABA therapy is life-changing for children with developmental challenges. It helps them build communication, social, and coping skills that are essential to their development,” Millar explains. “Every child deserves access to that opportunity, yet too many families face barriers such as high costs, long waiting lists, and limited insurance coverage.”
Research shows the impact of early ABA therapy on children with autism and other developmental disorders is profound. According to the CDC, 1 in 36 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism, and studies indicate that early access to ABA therapy can greatly improve long-term outcomes. However, many families struggle to afford the $30,000-$60,000 yearly cost of ABA therapy, often facing insurance restrictions or long wait times for available therapists.
Millar, who transitioned from a veterinary career path to child development, founded Behavior Change LLC to create a supportive environment where families can receive compassionate, effective, and accessible ABA therapy. “Working with children and families through different agencies showed me firsthand the benefits of ABA therapy, but I also saw the gaps in accessibility and affordability,” says Millar. “That’s why I’m so passionate about making it available to all families who need it.”
Through her advocacy, Millar emphasizes that access to ABA therapy should not be a privilege but a fundamental right. She is calling on policymakers, insurance companies, and communities to recognize the long-term benefits of ABA therapy, advocating for expanded insurance coverage, additional funding resources, and increased training opportunities to address the shortage of ABA professionals.
To encourage families navigating these challenges, Millar shares strategies from her own journey. She advises families to seek support, connect with mentors in the field, and prioritize early intervention whenever possible. "Building confidence in families and guiding them through the process of ABA therapy is one of the most rewarding parts of my work," she shares. "Together, we can ensure every child has the chance to reach their full potential."
