Power Acceleration technology identifies additional capacity for constrained grid infrastructure in Southern California
GridCARE today announced that it is working with Southern California Edison (SCE) to explore physics-based AI technology to identify additional capacity that could support new customer connections on otherwise constrained parts of its grid. GridCARE's Power Acceleration may help bring customers online sooner, maintain reliability and improve affordability by getting more capacity from existing assets.
In an initial study, SCE selected a constrained Inland Empire circuit to assess whether additional capacity could be identified while maintaining reliability requirements. Working with GridCARE, the analysis identified a potential of 20 MW of additional flexible capacity that could safely support future customer energization.
"We are looking for innovative solutions that can help us get more out of our existing grid – unlocking capacity for customers without relying on costly and time-consuming infrastructure expansion," said Shinjini Menon, senior vice president of System Planning & Engineering for SCE. "Combined with demand flexibility, it has the potential to accelerate our ability to meet new electricity demand and make the grid more affordable for customers."
SCE is exploring the use of Power Acceleration at several other locations on its system to energize EV charging, manufacturing, commercial and other customers that can benefit the local economy.
"Public support for AI will depend on whether communities share in its benefits," said Amit Narayan, founder and CEO of GridCARE. "The state that leads in AI will also lead in using AI to make the grid work for everyone. SCE is showing that growth and affordability can go hand in hand. Every success makes the case for action stronger and the case for delay harder to defend."
Flexibility Needs to Be Qualified to Become Capacity
Duke University research estimates that existing U.S. power systems could accommodate nearly 100 GW of new load at an annual curtailment rate of just 0.5%. Realizing that potential, however, requires proof at each circuit and substation that the safety margins needed for reliable grid operation remain intact.
Across a large grid, the possible combinations of locations, hourly demand, weather, equipment outages, and flexibility resources produce quadrillions of scenarios to analyze. GridCARE's physics-based AI accelerates the search for workable solutions, which utility engineers then test in their own planning tools to qualify.
