Council for Citizens Against Government Waste launches effort urging Congress to address 340B reform promptly and responsibly to ensure greater accountability in the program

Today, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) launched a national multi-media campaign calling on Congress to reform the 340B Drug Pricing Program. CCAGW is urging lawmakers to prioritize bringing greater transparency and accountability to the program, which special interests have exploited by pocketing drug discounts meant for vulnerable patients. The campaign focuses on widespread abuses in the program and outlines what Congress needs to do to ensure greater accountability and transparency, including strongly defining what constitutes a 340B patient.

“340B program costs have increased substantially over the past 10 years, and it’s time for Congress to adopt reforms that will finally serve the patients and communities that need it most,” said Tom Schatz, President, Council for Citizens Against Government Waste. “Since its inception in 1992, the 340B Drug Pricing Program’s mission has been to provide affordable medications to those most in need, but a lack of transparency and accountability has instead allowed special interests to circle like sharks in a feeding frenzy to line their own pockets.”

Under 340B, which is the second-largest federal prescription drug program, safety-net hospitals and health care providers are expanding the scope of the program beyond what was originally intended by Congress and are doing so in a manner that does not benefit patients. Congress must act to reform the 340B Program to deliver savings to the patients and communities it was designed to serve. CCAGW remains committed to prioritizing reforms that improve patient access while ensuring proper accountability and transparency of this critical program.

CCAGW is a nonprofit organization that engages in lobbying and grassroots activities to eliminate waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government.
