Americans Choose Laundry as the One “Forever Favorite” Household Chore; Are Unlikely to Use Cleaning Hacks on Floors

Spring cleaners looking for ways to hack their cleaning routine, lessen the duration, yet keep their homes safe

With spring in full bloom, a recent Bona/Harris Poll online survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults found that more than 9 in 10 U.S. adults (93%) spring clean their home.

With the invention of #CleanTok and cleaning hacks, the poll looked at behaviors as it relates to cleaning hacks, the amount of time spent cleaning, and favorite household chores. The survey was commissioned by Bona®, a global, sustainably-driven company that supplies products for installing, renovating, maintaining and restoring premium floors.

Across all ages, genders, and regions throughout the U.S., one chore rose to the top when asked about a favorite household chore to do for the rest of their lives – laundry (23%), followed by de-cluttering/organizing (18%) and dishes (14%). Though the most prevalent amount of time spent spring cleaning was a few days (28%), Gen Z and Millennials (ages 18-44) are more likely to spend less time, with 18% saying they only spend a few hours and 28% spending one full day. To help clean faster, most Americans (92%) noted they’d like some type of cleaning “hack,” most commonly for chores such as cleaning the bathroom, de-cluttering/organizing, and washing windows.

“We’ve seen a recent trend of increased interest in cleaning hacks, or the introduction of DIY solutions to lessen the amount of time it takes to complete a chore in the home,” said Andy Telatnik, Director of Marketing – Retail, Bona. “While we appreciate a cleaning hack as much as the next person, some hacks and DIY solutions can be dangerous for certain areas of the home – including your hardwood or hard surface floors. For these areas, it’s important to use a cleaning solution that’s formulated for the specific surface with the right mop and microfiber pad to avoid damage or oversaturation.”

Other findings include:

  • West coasters were more likely than Northeasterners and Midwesterners to spring clean for a full day (26% vs 17% each) whereas Northeasterners and Midwesterners generally take a few days.
  • Northeasterners were most passionate about laundry as their favorite household chore, with 30% selecting this chore compared to 23% of those residing in the south and 21% across the other regions.
  • Women were more likely than men to choose de-cluttering/organizing as their favorite household chore (22% vs. 14%); and 35-44-year-olds chose vacuuming and cleaning up carpets ahead of doing dishes.
  • Women were more likely than men to desire a de-cluttering/organizing hack (42% vs. 29%) and older generations noted they are looking for a hack to wash windows.
  • Adults aged 35-44 also placed hacks for cleaning hard surface floors (28%) in their top three list for desired hacks.

Nearly 1 in 4 (24%) Americans noted they want a “hack” for cleaning hard surface floors, yet when asked about aspects of their home for which they would not use a cleaning hack, many adults mentioned floors – and hardwood floors in particular. One woman from California noted she wouldn’t use a hack for cleaning the kitchen floor as she has not “seen any cleaning hack that would really clean the floor.” Another participant mentioned she “would not want to use a hack on waxing floors nor polishing furniture [as you] run the risk of destroying the floor and furniture.”
