Marquis Who's Who Honors Dr. Floyd W. McCoy for Contributions to Geology

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / March 13, 2025 / Marquis Who's Who has honored Dr. Floyd W. McCoy for his contributions to geology. Dr. McCoy is a stalwart geologist with more than six decades of experience in the education sector. His areas of expertise are marine geology, volcanology and archaeology.

Since 1990, Dr. McCoy has been teaching at the University of Hawaii as a professor of geology, geophysics and oceanography. His experience and expertise have made him an admired and respected figure in the education sector. He has been teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. He is also a graduate of the University of Hawaii, which earned him the Alumnus of the Year Award in 2021.

Before assuming duties as a professor at the University of Hawaii, Dr. McCoy had previous professional experience in the U.S. Navy. He served his country for seven years between 1953 and 1960. During this period, he was also involved in U.S. military actions, including the First Taiwan Strait Crisis, also referred to as the Formosa Crisis, which took place from 1954 to 1955.

After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, Dr. McCoy enrolled in the University of Hawaii and graduated with a bachelor's degree in geology in 1962. This was followed by earning a master's degree in volcanology three years later in 1965. Later, in 1974, Dr. McCoy joined Harvard University to further his education as a postgraduate student and earned a doctorate in geological sciences.

Dr. McCoy is widely recognized for his contributions to the field of education. Apart from teaching, he has also assisted his colleagues and guided institutions worldwide. He has traveled to Greece, Italy and New York as a professor and scientist. It was in Santorini where Dr. McCoy worked on the most memorable project of his career. The project was based on the geological and geophysical survey of late Bronze Age deposits in Greece on Santorini and Crete. It involved understanding the impact of this natural phenomenon on the Minoan culture that lived there. The project eventually changed many perceptions and was later studied in depth to understand the basis for the Atlantis myth.

Another milestone project in Dr. McCoy's illustrious career was on a scientific drilling ship substantiating plate tectonics. Dr. McCoy spent five months at sea working on the project. Besides being a professor of geology, Dr. McCoy has gathered invaluable experience working as a senior research scientist with the Associated Scientists at Woods Hole since 1986.

Before becoming a professor, Dr. McCoy worked at Columbia University from 1974 to 1986 as the curator and director at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. He is also an esteemed member of several renowned organizations related to the field of geology, such as the Geological Society of America, the Archaeological Institute of America and the Oceanography Society.

Throughout Dr. McCoy's career in the education sector, he has always adopted a goal-directed attitude toward work. He has always preferred to assimilate any information before putting it into practice or even teaching it to students. Much of what he has achieved results from his firm dedication and passion for his job as an educator. Being a successful professional, Dr. McCoy still plans to remain active as a lecturer, hoping to enjoy a well-deserved retirement in a couple of years.
