Los Angeles, CA - Following a successful theatrical rollout, the absurdist period comedy The Wilde Girls is now streaming on Plex, buoyed by rave critical reviews with a standout critical response from Screenage Wasteland that praises the film’s inventive humor, committed performances, and surprising emotional core.
In a January 22, 2026 review, Screenage Wasteland critic Valerie Morreale lauded the film as a bold and original comedy experiment, writing, “One of the things I love about cinema is that folks are always trying new things… directors are still coming up with new and innovative ways to tell a story.”
Directed by Los Angeles–based filmmaker Timothy Hines, The Wilde Girls follows spoiled sisters Tinsley and (Mattie) Wilde as they are forced into survival mode after losing their fortune in the 1929 stock market crash, embarking on a surreal, slapstick odyssey through the wilderness.
Morreale singled out the film’s leads, noting, “I really enjoyed the leads’ dynamic, and both Lydia Pearl Pentz and Cali Scolari are so deeply in character that their absurd exchanges… just kind of wash over you after a while.”
The review also highlights the film’s comedic lineage, adding that the movie “clearly took a lot of experience from Airplane, The Naked Gun and other movies like it, and the jokes are constant. There are simply so many jokes that the funny ones really carry you through, and the tone remains fun without dipping too far into cringe or trying too hard.”

Perhaps most striking, however, was the critic’s response to the film’s unexpected emotional resonance: “Despite the overall silliness of the premise, The Wilde Girls has a lot of heart… What surprised me most about The Wilde Girls was its more wholesome moments, and just how much they work. The tonal shift between the comedy and drama is stark, but once the scene settles in, it just works. I can’t really even explain why, but you just become very invested in the story and characters.”
Morreale emphasized the film’s infectious energy and ambition, concluding, “The Wilde Girls makes for a really fun comedy, and I’d love to see what this creative team does in the future.”
The film stars Los Angeles–based actors Lydia Pearl Pentz and Cali Scolari, and legendary New York stand up comic and actor Teddy Smith as the misanthropic mountain man who is forced to take pity on the sisters, alongside a supporting ensemble that leans fully into the film’s heightened, cartoonish reality. The Wilde Girls has drawn comparisons to cult comedy hits like Hundreds of Beavers for its fearless tonal swings and visual inventiveness.
The Wilde Girls is now streaming on Plex in over 200 countries and territories, Relay Film and TV and is soon to drop on dozens more streaming platforms, marking the next chapter for the indie favorite after its theatrical engagements in Los Angeles and New York.
