Revenue growth

A company’s long-term revenue performance can indicate its overall quality. Any business can experience short-term success, but top-performing ones sustain growth for years.

With $1.8 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, People is a mid-sized business services company, which sometimes brings disadvantages compared to larger competitors benefiting from better economies of scale.

People struggled to generate demand over the last five years. Its revenue dropped by 6.4% annually.

People quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within business services, a half-decade historical view may miss new innovations or demand cycles. People’s recent performance shows its demand remained suppressed as its revenue has declined by 11.1% annually over the last two years. People year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, People missed Wall Street’s consensus estimates and reported an uninspiring 3.6% year-on-year revenue decline, generating $430.8 million in revenue.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 1.2% over the next 12 months, according to S&P. While this projection implies its newer products and services will spur better top-line performance, it is still below the sector average.

Adjusted operating margin

Adjusted operating margin is a key measure of profitability. Think of it as net income (the bottom line) excluding the impact of non-recurring expenses, taxes and interest on debt – items less connected to business fundamentals.

People was profitable over the last five years but held back by its large cost base. Its average adjusted operating margin of 4.3% was weak for a business services company.

On the positive side, People’s adjusted operating margin rose by 10.1 percentage points over the last five years.

People trailing 12-month operating margin (non-GAAP)

This quarter, People generated an adjusted operating margin of 5.1%, up 12.5 percentage points year on year. This increase was a positive development, especially since its revenue fell, showing it became more efficient by reducing expenses.

Earnings per share

We track the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) for the same reason as long-term revenue growth. Compared to revenue, however, EPS highlights whether a company’s growth is profitable.

People’s EPS declined by 18.8% annually over the last five years, more than its revenue. The difference stemmed from higher interest expenses or taxes, as the company improved its adjusted operating margin and repurchased its shares during this time.

People trailing 12-month EPS (GAAP)

Like with revenue, we analyze EPS over a shorter period to see if we are missing a change in the business.

For People, its two-year annual EPS declines of 224% show it’s continued to underperform. These were poor results.

In Q3, People reported EPS of negative $9.15, down from negative $0.27 in the same quarter last year. This result missed analysts’ consensus estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects improvement. Analysts forecast People’s full-year EPS will flip from negative $4.38 to positive $0.97, according to S&P.

Key takeaways from People’s Q3 results

People’s delivered a weaker quarter with few positives, as revenue missed expectations and EPS fell short of Wall Street’s consensus estimates. Shares fell 3.9% to $35.42 immediately after the release.

People may have had a tough quarter. The latest results matter when deciding whether to invest now, but not as much as longer-term business quality and valuation. For more on People, read the full research report here (it’s free).
