What happened?
Shares of blockchain infrastructure company Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) fell 12% in the morning session after the company reported third-quarter 2026 financial results showing a 35% year-over-year drop in total revenue.
According to a company press release, Coinbase reported revenue of $1.22 billion, down 35% year on year. Both revenue and adjusted EBITDA of $332.9 million topped Wall Street expectations, and GAAP earnings of $2.51 per share significantly exceeded consensus estimates. $715 million of the company's $719 million in net income stemmed from gains on crypto assets held for investment, while adjusted net income was $78 million amid a softer crypto market. Additionally, prediction markets exceeded $200 million in annualized revenue. Investors grew cautious because the vast majority of bottom-line profit was driven by investment asset gains rather than recurring core transaction fees, while operating margin fell to 5.1% from 25.7% in the same quarter last year.
Adding to the weakness, Reuters reported, citing analysts, that attackers stole $6.3 billion from Binance in a record heist blamed on North Korea.
According to the report, Binance suspended withdrawals and committed to covering losses as cryptocurrency prices dropped across the market. Major security breaches at prominent digital asset platforms often shake market confidence, amplifying concerns that broader industry instability and falling token valuations could suppress trading volume.

What is the market telling us
Coinbase’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 58 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Coinbase and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 9 days ago when the stock gained 4.5% on the news that Bitcoin rebounded, advancing 3% over the prior 24 hours to cross $84,000 and sparked broad buying across cryptocurrency-linked equities.
Sentiment was bolstered as Needham analyst John Todaro reiterated a Buy rating on the stock and raised his price target to $205 from $200, representing nearly 20% upside from the previous session, in research reported by TipRanks. Todaro highlighted resilient transaction revenues alongside management's tightened operating expense guidance, noting that recurring subscription and services income continues to benefit from expanding market share for the USD Coin stablecoin.
Regulatory tailwinds added further momentum after the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency published Bulletin 2026-52, the agency announced in an official issuance. The document establishes revised weekly and quarterly reporting forms for permitted payment stablecoin issuers under the federal GENIUS Act, cementing formal supervisory benchmarks and balance-sheet transparency ahead of its 2027 rollout.
Coinbase is down 41.8% since the beginning of the year, and at $137.68 per share, it is trading 60% below its 52-week high of $343.78 from October 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Coinbase’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $415.95.
