What Happened?
A number of stocks jumped in the afternoon session after Mortgage lenders rose as Treasury yields fell and investors moved into government bonds. According to CNBC, the 10-year yield dropped more than 9 basis points to 5.093%, the 30-year fell more than 9 basis points to 5.425%, and the 2-year fell more than 4 basis points to 4.759%. CNBC tied the move to a flight out of technology shares and into bonds. Wholesale prices rose 6.3% in September from a year earlier, the biggest gain since 2022 and above the 5.5% Dow Jones estimate. That followed Wednesday’s consumer-price report, which showed prices up 3.7% on the year. Investors sold high-flying technology stocks on concern that hotter inflation and higher rates would pressure spending on artificial intelligence, and that selling pushed money into Treasuries. The 10-year yield is the benchmark for home loans. A lower yield cuts funding costs for originators and can bring back purchase and refinance demand. That is the setup that lifted Rocket Companies and the other mortgage and real-estate finance names in the group.
The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Zooming In On PennyMac Financial Services (PFSI)
PennyMac Financial Services’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 7 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 17 days ago when the stock dropped 1.6% on the news that 30-year mortgage rates pushed back above 7% following the Federal Reserve's September rate hike, while investors also fretted that AI agents could erode cheap deposit funding. According to Freddie Mac, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 7.03% for the week of Sept. 24, up from 6.95% the prior week and the highest since early 2025. Reuters, citing the Mortgage Bankers Association, earlier reported the MBA's 30-year contract rate jumped to 7.12% in the week ended Sept. 18 — the highest since May 2024 — after the Fed raised its benchmark by a quarter point to a 3.75%–4.00% target range. Higher home-loan rates threaten to cool purchase and refinance volume that supports originators such as Rocket Companies and commercial mortgage names tied to lending activity. Separately, Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal reported that Meta's Muse AI agent helped spark a selloff in financials on fears that automated assistants could disrupt businesses built on consumer inertia. Apollo Global Management chief economist Torsten Slok, in a note covered by CNBC, warned that agents could sweep household cash into higher-yielding fintech accounts and drain the low-cost deposits banks use to fund loans — compounding rate pressure even as loan demand has not collapsed.
PennyMac Financial Services is down 53.3% since the beginning of the year, and at $61.39 per share, it is trading 61.5% below its 52-week high of $159.46 from January 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of PennyMac Financial Services’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $925.60.
ONE MORE THING: The $21 AI Application Stock Wall Street Forgot. While Wall Street obsesses over who’s building AI, one company is already using it to print money. And nobody’s paying attention.
AI chip stocks trade at ridiculous valuations. This company processes a trillion consumer signals monthly using AI and trades at a third of the price. The gap won’t last. The institutions will figure it out. You need to see this first. Read the FREE Report Before They Notice.
