Life Savers ER Hosts Second Annual Blood Drive Amid National Blood Shortage

Life Savers Emergency Room (ER) is proud to announce its second annual blood drive event in Houston, “Summer Vibes & Saving Lives,” on June 22. This life-saving event is being held in collaboration with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center at two Life Savers ER locations and times.

The first blood drive session will take place from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Willowbrook location, 17685 TX-249 Houston, TX 77064. The second blood drive session will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Summerwood location, 12665 W Lake Houston PKWY Houston, TX 77064.

This timely initiative comes as the American Red Cross declares a blood shortage crisis in the United States for the first time due to a significant drop in donations, including a 62% decrease in blood drives at schools and colleges​​. The blood drive seeks to address this urgent need, particularly in Texas and is a call to action for community members to donate blood and potentially save lives​​.

“Life Savers ER is committed to improving the health and well-being of our local community. This blood drive is not just an event; it’s an opportunity for individuals to make a real difference,” said Dr. Foye Ikyaator, Director at Life Savers ER. “One donation can help two or more patients. We are in a critical period where every donation can be the difference between life and death for patients in need.”

Life Savers ER has partnered with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center for this event. All donors will receive a complimentary beach towel as a token of appreciation for their contribution​. The partnership is part of the Commit for Life program, which emphasizes the necessity of blood donations to ensure that blood components are always available for patients who need them​.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all past and future donors who are helping to save millions of lives through their generous blood donations,” added Dr. Foye. “Remember, there is no substitute for blood. It has to be voluntarily donated by one person to be given to another.”

The general requirements to participate in blood donation are simple; donors must be 17 years of age or older, or 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, and not on antibiotics. Donors must have last donated blood more than eight weeks ago​. For those who meet these criteria, donating blood is a small act that can have a profound impact.
