Professor Greg Watson has refreshed the Human Relations in Business and Industry course at Pima Community College, adding new modules that address remote team management, cross-cultural communication, and emotional intelligence development. The revised curriculum reflects the changing dynamics of today's hybrid and distributed work environments and continues on its regular schedule of running every eight to ten weeks.
The updated course serves two distinct audiences within the same classroom. Traditional college students pursuing business degrees study alongside established professionals and local small business owners who seek practical strategies they can apply in their own organizations. The combination of theory and application has become a defining feature of the program, with participants moving from concept to implementation within a single term.

Among the additions are expanded sections on digital communication etiquette, virtual team building, and online conflict resolution. These segments respond to the realities of managing people across different locations and time zones. The course also places renewed emphasis on emotional intelligence, using structured exercises and self-assessment tools to help participants adapt to diverse personality types and cultural backgrounds.
Experiential learning forms the core of the teaching approach. Interactive workshops, role-playing exercises, and collaborative projects simulate real-world business scenarios, allowing participants to practice the interpersonal competencies needed to build cohesive teams. This hands-on method supports student engagement and gives working professionals material they can take back to their workplaces immediately.
"The modern workplace looks very different than it did even a few years ago, and the curriculum needed to reflect that," said Dr. Greg Watson, course instructor and entrepreneurship educator. "Managers today lead teams they may never meet in person, navigate cultural differences every day, and rely on digital tools for communication. These updates prepare participants for those realities and give them tools grounded in both research and practice."
The course content covers communication dynamics, leadership development, change management, human motivation, workplace diversity, and decision-making. Each area combines classroom instruction with application exercises designed to reinforce learning. Watson draws on his background as a retired serial entrepreneur who managed multiple businesses before transitioning to education, bringing practical examples drawn from actual business challenges into each session.
"Student achievement in this course is measured by what participants can do differently when they return to their jobs," Watson said. "When a small business owner resolves a team conflict more effectively or a student lands a management role, that is the real outcome. The focus stays on student success and on building skills that hold up under pressure."
The scheduling of the course every eight to ten weeks accommodates both traditional semester calendars and the needs of working adults. Participants engage in discussions, real-world case studies, and practical exercises aimed at fostering positive relationships and productive work environments.
