Into The Light Helps Inland Empire Men Recognize When Anger and Irritability Signal Untreated Depression

REDLANDS, Calif. - Into The Light, a men's mental health treatment provider based in Redlands, is raising awareness this November of how depression often presents in men across the Inland Empire. Many men living with depression never describe themselves as sad. They describe themselves as short-tempered, worn out, or done with people, and the depression underneath goes unrecognized by the men themselves, their families, and sometimes their doctors.

The pattern is well documented. The National Institute of Mental Health lists anger, irritability, and aggressiveness among the common symptoms of mental health conditions in men, alongside fatigue, loss of interest, and increased substance use. The same agency notes that men are less likely than women to have received mental health treatment in the past year. When depression looks like a bad temper, it tends to be handled as a behavior problem rather than a health condition, and treatment gets delayed.

That delay has costs that show up at home and at work. A man whose depression presents as irritability may see his marriage strain, his relationships with his children grow distant, and his performance at work slip, all while insisting nothing is wrong. Family members often recognize that something has changed long before the man does, but without a name for it, the conversation becomes an argument instead of a path to care.

Into The Light's outpatient depression care for men is designed around that reality. Treatment begins with an individualized assessment that looks past the surface behavior to the mood, sleep, energy, and thinking patterns underneath. Clinical work draws on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and interpersonal therapy (IPT), with medication management available when clinically appropriate. Men can step into a Partial Hospitalization Program, an Intensive Outpatient Program, or standard outpatient care depending on the severity of symptoms and the structure their lives can sustain.

For men whose depression comes out primarily as anger, Into The Light pairs that treatment with structured anger management support focused on recognizing triggers, building emotional regulation and communication skills, and reducing the outbursts that damage relationships. The program treats anger as a signal worth understanding rather than a character flaw to be punished, which is often what allows a man to stay engaged long enough for the depression itself to lift.

"A lot of men come in because someone at home told them their anger was out of control, and that is usually the first time anyone has asked what is underneath it," said Ronald Honn, Chief Executive Officer of Into The Light. "Very often the answer is depression that has gone untreated for years. Once a man understands that the irritability is a symptom and not who he is, the work becomes something he can actually lean into."

Group therapy is delivered in a men-only setting, which helps many participants speak more openly about what they are carrying. Family therapy is also available, giving spouses, parents, and adult children a way to understand what depression looks like in the man they love and how to respond without escalating conflict.

"Families are often the first to see the change and the last to know what to call it," Honn said. "Giving them language for it, and giving men a place to treat it without shame, changes how quickly people get help."

Into The Light serves men across San Bernardino County and the wider Inland Empire from its men's mental health treatment center in Redlands, CA. The admissions team conducts complimentary insurance verification for prospective patients and their families. Anyone experiencing thoughts of suicide can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at any time.
