PORTSMOUTH, NH / ACCESS Newswire / August 18, 2026 / On September 9, 10, 11 and 12, 2026 light beams will rise from the 6,288 ft. summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire in a 25th anniversary tribute to veterans, firefighters and first responders who were impacted by the terrorist attack on America on September 11, 2001. Partners in the initiative are advancing plans for the display, which require extensive coordination and permitting logistics, not least of which is getting the equipment - lighting units, mounting frames, generators and fuel and the control board -- to produce the dramatic effect up the Mount Washington Auto Road to the Mount Washington Observatory, both of which are private enterprises within the Mount Washington State Park.
Considerable logistical challenges must be met to produce the light display from 8 pm to midnight on four successive nights (in a place often described as having the most challenging weather in the world). There are also considerations governing those affected by light beams rising three miles into the sky: aircraft and birds. The Honor Summit producers, Granite Springs Foundation and Malloy Events have secured the necessary permits from the Federal Aviation Administration and the NH Fish and Game Department. After discussions with Fish and Game, NH Audubon and the Cornell Ornithology Lab to understand the September migration patterns of birds in the area, the team decided to reduce the hours of lights from seven hours (8 pm to 3 am) to four hours (8 pm to midnight) and to turn off the lights periodically, especially if large flocks are observed in the vicinity. A representative from NH Audubon will be on-site to advise on those adjustments.
So far, major partners providing in-kind assistance and funding include Eversource and Sunbelt, Malloy Events, Wellpoint, Service Credit Union, GrottLuker & Co., Harbor Care, Exeter Hospital, Bill O'Malley, Mike and Sue Daigle, Two International Group. Banks around the state, including Piscataqua Savings Bank, Bangor Savings Bank, Merrimack County Savings Bank, Claremont Savings Bank, Kennebunk Savings, Machias Savings Bank, Eagle Bank, NH Trust, plus William & Reeves Commercial Real Estate have come on board as $2500 Community Allies.
Bob Coates, President of Eversource NH explained what inspired his support for The Honor Summit to remember the 45 lives with NH connections who were sacrificed. "We lost an employee, Deborah Megwig, on one of those flights [on September 11] and had families affected. There was a lot of loss for us. So ‘Never forget' is more than an adage, it's our mission," Coates said. "When I heard about the idea, we jumped in to support The Honor Summit. I encourage everyone on those days in September to take a moment to look up to Mount Washington and think about those rising light beams to express our thanks honor and dignity to those who may not be here and the need to support each other."
