UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / March 26, 2025 / Gordon D. McLaren, MD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who for his contributions to the medical field. The support of his groundbreaking research through the successful acquisition of research grants has further solidified his reputation in the medical community.

Establishing an Illustrious Career
Inspired by his father, who held a PhD in chemistry, Dr. McLaren originally pursued a major in chemistry while in college; however, during the summer before his senior year, he realized his passion for medicine, which led to his decision to apply for medical school. This decision spurred him to fulfill certain prerequisites to ensure he was fully prepared for the transition.
Dr. McLaren earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from the University of Missouri in 1965, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from Stanford University in 1970. After this, he completed an internship in internal medicine at Bassett Medical Center (affiliated with Columbia University) in 1971. His educational background laid a strong foundation for his future ventures in medicine and research.
In 1988, Dr. McLaren joined the University of California Irvine Medical Center as a member of the Division of Hematology/Oncology until his retirement, when he earned the distinction of professor emeritus. During his tenure, he has also been affiliated with Veterans Affairs medical centers in Cleveland, North Dakota and Veterans Affairs Long Beach Health Care.
Before his time at UCI Medical Center, Dr. McLaren was the chief of the division of hematology and oncology at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. McLaren has made significant contributions to academic medicine through his combination of patient care, teaching and research, which has distinguished him as a leading figure in hematology and oncology.
Dedication Leads to Success
Dr. McLaren's role as a past chair of the Scientific Committee on Iron and Heme for the American Society of Hematology highlights his dedication to his field and this organization has further recognized his contributions to the field by honoring him with the Distinguished Emeritus Member Award. He also has held multiple certifications, including medical licenses in Georgia, Ohio, and California. Dr. McLaren is certified in internal medicine and in hematology from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
As a medical student, Dr. McLaren initially conducted his research somewhat independently; however, he later realized the significance of collaboration during his hematology-oncology training. His experience working with other experts in the field has been instrumental to his achievements and he credits much of his success to these collaborators. He continues to pursue new opportunities with others, conducting vital research on hematology to this day.
