Lake Wales, FL - Kincaid Electrical Services Inc is sharing generator installation and electrical safety guidance for Lake Wales homeowners preparing for storm-related power outages. Hurricanes, strong thunderstorms, and fallen power lines can interrupt electricity for extended periods, leaving households without power for essential appliances and equipment. While backup generators can provide electricity during these outages, the company emphasizes proper installation to protect homeowners and utility workers.
One major safety concern is connecting a generator directly to a household outlet. This practice, known as backfeeding, can send electricity from the generator into utility lines while the main power supply is down. As a result, lines that appear to be without power may become dangerous for utility workers carrying out repairs. Improper connections can also create electrical hazards within the home.
To prevent these risks, Kincaid Electrical Services Inc recommends having generators connected by a qualified electrician using the appropriate safety equipment. The electrician in Lake Wales, FL, explains that generators supplying power through a home's electrical wiring require a transfer switch or an approved interlock system. These devices prevent generator power and utility electricity from being connected at the same time, helping protect both the property and the surrounding electrical network.
Proper generator placement is another important part of safe operation. Portable generators must be used outdoors, away from windows, doors, and ventilation openings, because their exhaust produces carbon monoxide. When connecting a portable generator to household wiring, an electrician can install a dedicated outdoor connection point. This allows the generator to supply electricity through approved equipment rather than an ordinary wall outlet.
Before completing an installation, an electrician must also check the home's electrical panel and existing wiring. Some properties may require changes to safely accommodate the new connection. Kincaid Electrical Services Inc advises homeowners to consider these requirements during the planning stage, including any permits and inspections required for the installation.
For homeowners seeking a permanent backup power source, Kincaid Electrical Services Inc provides whole house generator installation services. The company installs standby generators outside the home, where they can start automatically when utility power fails. An automatic transfer switch connects the home to generator power during an outage and switches it back to the main electricity supply once service is restored.
Before installation, Kincaid Electrical Services Inc assesses the household's power needs to recommend a suitable generator. Its electricians review the appliances and systems homeowners want to keep running during an outage, including refrigerators, lighting, air conditioning, and well pumps. This assessment helps determine the appropriate generator size and the electrical work required for installation.
Kincaid Electrical Services Inc encourages Lake Wales homeowners to plan their backup power arrangements in advance and avoid unsafe generator connections during outages. The company continues to serve residential and commercial customers throughout Polk County and surrounding communities, providing generator installation services with an emphasis on electrical safety, proper connections, and compliance with applicable requirements.
