- First Airo trainsets enter revenue service in the Pacific Northwest, connecting Washington and Oregon
- Builds on Amtrak's landmark national fleet renewal program, which includes 83 trainsets with modern amenities, enhanced accessibility and intelligent digital systems
- Buy America compliant trainsets built in Siemens’ California and North Carolina facilities draw on nearly 100 suppliers across 31 states
Amtrak and Siemens celebrated a defining milestone for American passenger rail today, as the new Airo fleet entered passenger service and embarked on its inaugural journey through the Pacific Northwest. Amtrak Cascades customers will be the first in the nation to experience the Siemens-designed and -manufactured trainsets, beginning a national rollout that will modernize service across the country.
The launch turns a landmark investment into a passenger-ready reality. In 2021, Siemens Mobility was selected to design, manufacture and technically support Amtrak's newest train fleet with the largest contract in Siemens Mobility's North American history. The broader Airo program now encompasses 83 trainsets, including 86 Charger locomotives and 576 passenger coaches, designed to help reshape how people travel between communities across the United States.
“This is more than the debut of a new train, it's the moment a once-in-a-generation investment in American passenger rail becomes real for travelers,” said Tobias Bauer, CEO of Siemens Mobility North America. “Airo brings together American manufacturing, decades of global rail expertise, and intelligent digital technology to create a fleet built for the future.”
Beginning September 30, two Airo trainsets will begin operating four daily trips for Amtrak Cascades, connecting Seattle, Portland, and Eugene. Additional trainsets will enter service through early 2027, ultimately replacing the existing Amtrak Cascades fleet.
Designed specifically for the Pacific Northwest, the trains will feature the route's signature evergreen, cream and mocha palette and design elements inspired by the Cascade mountain range.
“The arrival of the new Airo fleet marks an exciting moment for Amtrak Cascades and passenger rail in the Pacific Northwest,” said Amtrak Interim President Byl Hermann. “After extensive planning, design, manufacturing, and testing, we're ready to welcome customers aboard. This is an important milestone for not only Amtrak Cascades customers, but for Amtrak's broader efforts to modernize and expand passenger rail across the country.”
The Airo fleet is being produced through a bi-coastal Siemens Mobility manufacturing operation in Sacramento, California, and Lexington, North Carolina. The Buy America compliant program incorporates components from nearly 100 suppliers across 31 states, extending the fleet's economic impact through a broad U.S. supply chain.
Offering an elevated passenger experience, the Airo trainsets feature modern interiors, ergonomic seating, and onboard connectivity features that make travel more productive and enjoyable. Accessibility is integrated throughout the fleet, with features such as automated boarding solutions, onboard passenger lifts, accessible seating, and enhanced audible and visual messaging, creating a more inclusive travel experience.
The fleet also incorporates next-generation propulsion and braking technologies that reduce fuel consumption and support smoother operations. Integrated wireless communications, remote monitoring, and digital diagnostics provide real-time performance insights, enabling predictive maintenance and improving reliability.
The Amtrak Cascades launch is the first step in the national Airo rollout. Future trainsets, expected to increase ridership nationwide, are planned for the Northeast Regional and other state-support routes through 2030, building toward a modern, connected fleet serving communities across the country.
