With the rapid development of industrialization and intensive agriculture, soil heavy metal pollution has become an increasingly serious environmental issue. Heavy metals can accumulate in soils, be absorbed by crops, and eventually enter the human food chain, posing potential risks to food safety and human health.

Humic acid, as a natural high-molecular-weight organic substance, contains abundant active functional groups such as carboxyl groups, phenolic hydroxyl groups, and quinone groups. It possesses multiple functions, including adsorption, chelation, and pH regulation. Due to its advantages of being environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and capable of improving soil quality, humic acid has become one of the key materials for the immobilization and remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils.

The mechanisms by which humic acid reduces the bioavailability of heavy metals in soil are diverse and synergistic.

Firstly, chelation and complexation play a major role. The abundant functional groups in humic acid can react with heavy metal ions such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) through coordination reactions, forming stable and water-insoluble humic acid–metal complexes, thereby significantly reducing the concentration of free heavy metal ions in soil.

Secondly, physical adsorption contributes to heavy metal immobilization. Humic acid possesses a loose porous structure and a large specific surface area, allowing it to adsorb heavy metal ions through surface interactions and limit their migration and diffusion within the soil environment.

Meanwhile, humic acid can regulate soil pH, promote the formation of soil aggregates, and improve soil physicochemical properties. These effects facilitate the transformation of active exchangeable heavy metal forms into more stable residual forms, fundamentally reducing their bioavailability to plants.

Numerous field and pot experiments have demonstrated that appropriate application of humic acid can significantly reduce available heavy metal concentrations in soils, effectively inhibit the uptake and accumulation of heavy metals by crops, and improve agricultural product safety. In addition, humic acid can enhance soil microbial activity and optimize microbial community structure. Through microbial immobilization mechanisms, it further strengthens heavy metal remediation effects while providing dual benefits of pollution control and soil fertility improvement.

CityMax Group has developed a comprehensive portfolio of humic acid-based products, including micro-granules, tablets, granules, liquid formulations, and multifunctional biostimulant combinations. Products such as ORGANMIX, DIAMONDMAX, MAX UNIQUE HUMATE 100, ULTRA HUMIMAX, MAX HUMIBUILD, and ULTRA FULVIC LQ have demonstrated significant effects in reducing available heavy metal concentrations in soil, improving soil health, and supporting safer crop production.
