Although growing numbers of people are talking about mental health and normalizing the realities of it, some of the consequences are still taboo. Zayra Del Carmen takes on one of the most significant consequences of neglecting your mental health, suicide and self-harm. Just Stay Alive: How to Find a Way Even When You Think Everything Is Lost shares Zayra’s powerful story, including her suicide attempt, the difficulties she had in receiving support and care, along with the strategies and tools that assisted her in finding and embracing peace.
“My life was filled with trauma and grief as I dealt with the loss of my mother at an early age and later was sexually abused. Talking about my feelings and working through the stress and trauma of these events was not part of my childhood experience. I wrote this book to help others know that it is okay to seek help and support. You do not have to heal alone,” said Zayra.
Just Stay Alive also shares Zayra’s battle with depression and its impact on her physical health. Zayra compassionately shares how she coaches others to prioritize their mental health, diving into their beliefs, values, and thought patterns.
“One of the hardest things people have to do is ask for help. If you ask for help, you seem weak and unable to care for your responsibilities. I want people to shift that dynamic and understand that help and support are how the strongest among us make it through the worst times,” said Zayra.
In Just Stay Alive: How to Find a Way Even When You Think Everything Is Lost, Zayra focuses on understanding why you think and speak in specific ways and the power of changing how you view yourself. Knowing what you are feeling and that it does not define who you are is just one of the ways that Zayra reframes mental health and emotional responses.
“I believe people need to break free of the victim mentality that has them thinking they are powerless. Life can throw a lot of challenging circumstances our way. We cannot control how others behave, but we can control how we react and focus on what is possible to change. Suicide ends your life, leaving others behind to grieve. No matter how bad you might feel in the moment, you do have the power to get through these experiences. Instead of focusing on why me, I encourage people to look for something they can learn about themselves or others. Personal growth is a huge part of any mental health journey,” said Zayra.
