“The value of our dairy RNG investments and station network was underscored by our solid third quarter results. Our priority is to scale production and deliveries to drive sustained earnings growth and long-term shareholder value. Favorable developments in the quarter supported a significant 45Z production tax credit contribution to Adjusted EBITDA, and we expect continued contributions from 45Z through at least 2029. We also monetized PTC and ITC credits associated with our dairy RNG portfolio, further strengthening our cash position during the quarter. Meanwhile, our core recurring RNG and conventional natural gas fuel sales, construction and operating services businesses continued to perform in line with our expectations.”

Revenue growth

A company’s long-term performance can give signals about its business quality. Even a bad business, especially in a cyclical industry, can perform well for a year or so, but a top-tier one should exhibit resilience through cycles. Clean Energy Fuels’s revenue grew at a solid 13.4% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years. Its growth beat the average energy upstream and integrated energy company and shows its offerings resonate with customers.

Clean Energy Fuels quarterly revenue

Even a long stretch in energy can be shaped by a single commodity cycle, so extending the view to ten years adds another perspective and reveals which companies are built to grow regardless of the pricing regime. Clean Energy Fuels’s annualized revenue growth of 0.7% over the last ten years is below its five-year trend, but the results were still respectable.

This quarter, Clean Energy Fuels reported year-on-year revenue growth of 5.7%, and its $112.2 million of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 10.8%.

Adjusted EBITDA margin

Clean Energy Fuels was profitable over the last five years but held back by its large cost base. Its average EBITDA margin of 15% was among the worst in the energy upstream and integrated energy sector.

On the positive side, Clean Energy Fuels’s EBITDA margin rose by 3 percentage points over the last year.

Clean Energy Fuels trailing 12-month EBITDA margin

This quarter, Clean Energy Fuels generated an EBITDA margin of 24.2%, up 7.9 percentage points year on year. This improvement shows it was more efficient. Its adjusted EBITDA beat Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 49.1%.

Cash flow

As mentioned above, adjusted EBITDA ignores capital structure and drilling expenditure decisions. These are two major aspects of an energy producer, so investors need to account for both to get a comprehensive picture of business quality. In other words, adjusted EBITDA margins could be solid but free cash flow could be poor because asset decline rates are high and drilling is expensive. Free cash flow tells you not only about the economics of past production but also how much it costs to stay in business through further drilling or extraction.

Clean Energy Fuels has shown weak cash profitability relative to peers over the last five years, giving the company fewer opportunities to return capital to shareholders. Its free cash flow margin averaged 2%, below expectations for an upstream and integrated energy business.

While the level of free cash flow margins is important, their consistency matters just as much.

Clean Energy Fuels’s ratio of quarterly free cash flow volatility to West Texas Intermediate, or WTI, crude price volatility over the past five years was 54.6 (lower is better), indicating that its cash generation is far more sensitive to commodity-price swings than most peers. This elevated volatility limits its access to capital in downturns and makes it unlikely to act as a consolidator when weaker competitors come under pressure.

Why use free cash flow to assess stability against commodity prices? Why not compare revenue or EBITDA to WTI in the case of Clean Energy Fuels? Because what ultimately matters is not how much revenue or profit a company earns when prices are high but how much cash it can generate when prices are low. Free cash flow is the superior metric because it includes everything from hedging effectiveness to growth and maintenance capex to management behavior during good times and bad.

Key takeaways from Clean Energy Fuels’s Q3 results

Clean Energy Fuels delivered a strong quarter, with EBITDA beating Wall Street’s consensus estimates by a wide margin and EPS also topping analysts’ consensus expectations. Shares soared 10.9% to $1.67 immediately after the results.

Clean Energy Fuels had a solid quarterly earnings result, but is the stock a good investment? The latest quarter matters, but longer-term business quality and valuation matter more when deciding whether to invest. For more on Clean Energy Fuels, read our full research report here (it’s free).
