What Happened?

Shares of health insurance company UnitedHealth (NYSE: UNH) jumped 3.9% in the pre-market session after the company announced third-quarter 2026 financial results that topped expectations and raised its full-year profit outlook as operational execution drove a rebound in profitability.

Consolidated revenues reached $112.7 billion and operating earnings totaled $6.6 billion, with operating margin expanding to 5.8% from 3.8% a year earlier, according to the company’s press release. Adjusted earnings landed at $4.69 per share, and UnitedHealth upgraded its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings outlook to at least $20.50 per share. Both revenue and adjusted earnings topped Wall Street expectations, exceeding analyst estimates of $111.4 billion in revenue and $4.14 in adjusted earnings. Chief Executive Officer Stephen Hemsley stated in the earnings release that results reflected discipline and execution across the enterprise.

After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $375.14, down 0.8% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

UnitedHealth’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 4 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 9 months ago when the stock dropped 18.8% on the news that the company reported its fourth-quarter results and issued a weak revenue forecast for 2026.

For the upcoming year, the company guided for full-year revenue of approximately $439 billion at the midpoint. This figure not only represents a potential decline from its 2025 revenue but also came in 3.7% below Wall Street's consensus estimates. While the company's fourth-quarter revenue and earnings per share were in line with expectations, the disappointing forward-looking guidance signaled potential challenges ahead, leading to the sharp sell-off.

UnitedHealth is up 11.5% since the beginning of the year, but at $375.14 per share, it is still trading 14% below its 52-week high of $436.35 from July 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of UnitedHealth’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $929.59.
