Organization ranked in top four percent for work-life flexibility
DeVry employs over 2,700 colleagues across 49 states, allowing the university to draw talent from across the country while providing employees with flexibility in where they live and work.
“Remote work has allowed DeVry to broaden the talent we are able to attract while building a culture that gives people both flexibility and a strong sense of connection to our mission,” said Elise Awwad, president and CEO of DeVry University. “We have been intentional about hiring good people and giving them the tools, structure and support they need to do their best work wherever they are. When that is reinforced by clear expectations and accountability, flexibility becomes an organizational advantage that helps us attract talent, sustain performance and remain focused on the learners we serve. This recognition is a direct reflection of how our colleagues experience that culture.”
Presented by Energage, the Remote Work Top Workplaces award is based solely on employee responses to an Energage workplace survey. This year, DeVry was also recognized in the Top 1% of its industry for employees reporting professional growth opportunities and caring, supportive managers. The university also ranked in the Top 2% for keeping employees informed and the Top 4% for work-life flexibility and employees feeling motivated by their work.
Employee feedback provides additional evidence of DeVry’s workplace culture. According to Energage, 87% of DeVry employees said their managers support their professional growth and development, 87% were happy with their work-life flexibility, 85% said their jobs are meaningful and 75% said they would highly recommend working at DeVry. Another 77% said they are able to work at their full potential.
The results mirror DeVry’s internal engagement survey earlier this year, which found 93% favorable ratings for leadership effectiveness, 91% for mission and strategy, and 86% for transparency. DeVry also boasts a 90% employee retention rate.
This recognition comes as higher education continues to navigate workforce retention challenges and a gap between how employees work and how they want to work. According to the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) median voluntary turnover among full-time higher education staff remains above pre-pandemic levels. Its 2025 survey also found that 61% of higher education employees prefer hybrid or remote work, while only 28% currently work in those arrangements.
“A strong workplace culture isn’t defined by where people sit. It’s built through how people are led, supported and connected to one another,” added Dave Barnett, chief administrative officer of DeVry University. “In a remote environment, that means being intentional about communication, providing meaningful feedback and giving colleagues opportunities to learn and grow. Those practices help create the trust and connection people need to do their best work while staying focused on the learners we serve.”
In anonymous feedback collected through the Energage survey, one employee said, “I am able to grow, apply, and share my skills in efforts to make a positive difference in others’ lives. I am able to work alongside people who love what they do and are talented at helping students achieve their academic goals.”
The award builds on DeVry’s broader 2026 Top Workplaces recognition. Earlier this year, the university received the Top Workplaces Industry Award for Education and eight Culture Excellence Awards for Innovation, Employee Appreciation, Work-Life Flexibility, Employee Well-Being, Professional Development, Compensation & Benefits, Leadership, and Purpose & Values.
