What Happened?

Shares of satellite radio and media company Sirius XM (NASDAQ: SIRI) jumped 2.7% in the morning session after market participants linked SpaceX's $8 billion deal for Grain Management's spectrum portfolio to the value of the company's licensed satellite spectrum.

According to StreetInsider, SpaceX agreed to pay $8 billion for up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management, a portfolio that came from T-Mobile and still needs FCC approval. That price works out to about $571 million per megahertz. The deal was announced after Thursday’s close. Elon Musk called it the last piece SpaceX needed for full phone coverage in the U.S., and the company, in a statement cited by CNBC, called the low-band airwaves prime spectrum for Starlink Mobile because 800 MHz signals travel farther and pass through buildings more readily than the mid-band spectrum SpaceX already holds.

Sirius XM’s licenses are S-band, built for satellite radio rather than phone service. The article notes the SXM-11 satellite went into full service in late September, covering about 8 million square miles and about 210 million equipped vehicles. Using the SpaceX price on an estimated 25 MHz of Sirius XM spectrum, the article puts a rough value of about $14.3 billion on those licenses, above the company’s $9.1 billion market value, and it flags that figure as an estimate because satellite-radio licenses are not the same as 800 MHz cellular spectrum. Shares were at $26.97. Morgan Stanley, in a note cited by Reuters, said the Grain deal shows SpaceX is becoming a more aggressive buyer of spectrum, with any pressure on the carriers likely to show up first in rural markets.

After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $26.67, up 1.3% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Sirius XM’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 8 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 11 months ago when the stock gained 10.1% on the news that the company reported third-quarter results that surpassed analyst expectations for both revenue and profit. The satellite radio company reported a GAAP profit of $0.84 per share, a significant turnaround from a loss in the same period last year and 7.9% above consensus estimates. Revenue for the quarter was flat year-on-year at $2.16 billion but still beat forecasts. Despite a year-on-year decline of 574,000 total subscribers, investors appeared to focus on the improved profitability. A key highlight was the company's free cash flow of $257 million, with the free cash flow margin expanding to 11.9% from just 1.1% in the prior year's quarter.

Sirius XM is up 30% since the beginning of the year, but at $26.67 per share, it is still trading 18.2% below its 52-week high of $32.59 from July 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Sirius XM’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $447.40.
