What Happened?

Shares of biotech company Regeneron (NASDAQ: REGN) fell 4% in the afternoon session after the biotechnology company expanded its immunology alliance with Sanofi on terms that left economics for its blockbuster drug Dupixent untouched.

Sanofi will pay Regeneron $1 billion upfront and up to $7 billion in development, regulatory, and commercial milestones for four next-generation, long-acting antibodies, the company said in a press release. The agreement settles prior litigation and calls for both drugmakers to equally split global development costs, commercialization expenses, and future profits, while leaving the existing Dupixent profit-sharing terms unchanged, the company added. The announcement followed investor expectations that a renegotiation might yield better terms on Dupixent, with nearly a quarter of investors surveyed by RBC Capital seeking more constructive economics on the franchise, according to Investing.com. While Sanofi shares rose roughly 2% in European trading, according to Reuters, Regeneron reversed an early morning gain as trading progressed.

By locking in a 50:50 profit split without sweetening Dupixent royalties, Regeneron surrendered half the economics on its next-generation pipeline while committing to co-fund development expenses that Sanofi historically covered upfront. The sell-off reflects a market that viewed the upfront cash as insufficient compensation for diluting long-term margin upside on its most promising immunology follow-ons.

After the initial drop, the shares shed some of the losses and rose to $736.56, down 2.9% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Regeneron’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 4 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 5 months ago when the stock dropped 10.5% on the news that its experimental cancer treatment failed to meet the main goal in a late-stage study for patients with a type of advanced skin cancer. The company announced its Phase 3 trial for a combination of its drugs, fianlimab and cemiplimab, did not achieve statistical significance in improving progression-free survival—the time patients live without their disease worsening. Although the trial showed a numeric improvement, the results were not definitive enough to be considered a success, raising investor concerns about the drug's future. The study compared the treatment against Merck & Co.'s established drug, Keytruda, for patients with advanced melanoma.

Regeneron is down 5.1% since the beginning of the year, and at $736.56 per share, it is trading 13.6% below its 52-week high of $852.03 from September 2026. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Regeneron’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,290.
