Air Zone Experts announces a new homeowner guide explaining when replacing an air conditioner and furnace together makes sense, covering system compatibility, equipment age, and costs.

-- Air Zone Experts, a family business serving Little Elm, Texas and surrounding communities since 2008, has announced a new guide on replacing an air conditioner and furnace at the same time. The guide is intended for households across Denton, Collin, and Dallas counties weighing a full system replacement against a single unit swap.

The guide responds to a decision many homeowners face when an outdoor unit fails during a North Texas summer: whether to replace the furnace as well as the air conditioner. Because the two units often sit in different parts of the house, they are frequently treated as separate appliances, an assumption the guide sets out to correct.
Federal refrigerant rules have added another layer to the decision. Under the EPA's Technology Transitions Program, manufacturers have been barred since January 1, 2025, from producing new residential split air conditioning systems that use refrigerants with a global warming potential of 700 or higher, such as R410A. Newer systems typically use R454B or R32.
This change features prominently in the guide's compatibility section. Air Zone Experts explains that an indoor coil built for R410A generally cannot work with a new outdoor unit, so the coil is nearly always replaced. The guide also examines the furnace blower, which may be undersized for a newer air conditioner.
"Your furnace and air conditioner share the coil and the blower, so they really work as one system," a company representative explains. "Efficiency ratings like SEER2 are certified for matched equipment. Pair a new condenser with mismatched indoor parts, and the rating on the label may not be what the homeowner actually gets."
The guide also outlines when replacing both units is usually the stronger choice, such as when each is 10 to 15 years old, or when one fails and the other is the same age. Because Texas winters are mild, gas furnaces tend to outlast air conditioners, so a younger furnace with a compatible blower can often stay.
"Doing both at once costs more upfront, but the labor, permit, and inspection only happen once, and both warranties start together," the representative adds. "With the federal 25C tax credit unavailable for 2026 installations, we also encourage homeowners to ask about load calculations, costs over five years, and written warranties before committing."
